Dave Hutchinson in the Ledger is reporting that both Dyson and Barlow will not play this week against the Pats. I find it hard to believe that some source let this leak out as he states, I'm sure Mr. T. will find out the person responsible and deal with it appropriately. Anyway, the loss of Barlow doesn't bother me with Houston and Washington running but the loss of Dyson could be big. Don't like the idea of seeing too much of Justin Miller at the CB position.... http://www.nj.com/jets/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/116771625723900.xml&coll=1 Jets: Dyson, Barlow out against Pats Tuesday, January 02, 2007 BY DAVE HUTCHINSON Star-Ledger Staff HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The injury bug has bit the Jets and Patriots as they prepared for their wild-card round clash at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. The Jets will be without CB Andre Dyson (sprained knee) and RB Kevan Barlow (thigh), according to a member of the organization who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of coach Eric Mangini's policy of not giving out details on injuries. Also, the Patriots are not expected to have safety Rodney Harrison, who injured his knee in the season finale versus the Titans. Tennessee WR Bobby Wade hit Harrison with a block below the knee that the Patriots claimed was a cheap shot. Yesterday, the league said the block was legal. Second-year pro James Sanders would replace Harrison. Dyson, the Jets' best cornerback, was injured versus the Dolphins in Week 16. The Jets were hoping he could be ready for the playoffs but he needs at least another week. Barlow, who rushed for 75 yards in the second Patriots game in Week 10, was also injured against the Dolphins. The Jets won't rush him back with Cedric Houston available. Meanwhile, C Nick Mangold (leg) and G Brandon Moore (knee), who were both injured against the Raiders, underwent treatment yesterday and are expected to start Sunday. Mangold was injured on a FG attempt just before the half and returned to start the second half. Moore missed only a few snaps in the first half before returning. Both played the entire second half. CBs David Barrett and Justin Miller replaced Dyson against the Raiders and did a solid job. Journeyman Hank Poteat, a former Patriots, started on the other side. Rookie Drew Coleman is the Jets' only other CB and they may sign someone this week. RT Anthony Clements (offense), DE Shaun Ellis (defense) and DB Eric Smith (special teams) were named the players of the game by Mangini. The Patriots changed their surface at Gillette Stadium from grass to FieldTurf after the mud bath versus the Jets in Week 10. Former Jets QB Vinny Testaverde threw a TD pass against the Titans. Ex-Jets CB Ray Mickens is also on the Patriots roster.
Well I don't think that the Dyson loss was much of a surprise, with Jets reports stating that he would be out for a minimum of 2-4 weeks. Definitely a loss without him on the field though. Poteat and Barrett should be able to hold the fort, but I'm putting more $ on Poteat doing so than Barrett.
Hopefully Barrett remains in a situational role as when the Jets are forced to put him out there every down his weaknesses can really be exploited. There wasn't alot to complain about in the Raiders game, but on a 3rd down play on their FG drive the Jets blitzed and Barrett was 10 yards off his man. If he had only been 5 yards off it would've been an INT returned for 6. He covers the deep pass well because of the way he plays but Brady would absolutely eat him up, throwing in front of him all day long.
Yeah, Barrett has been stepping up lately, plus it's not like he has to cover Chad Johnson on Sunday. The key for our defense will be putting the same amount of pressure on Brady as they did in week 10. I'm also happy to see there's been nothing more to report about the possibility of Coles suffering from a concussion
If Mangini and Belichek showed us anything, it's that good coaching can negate the impact of injuries to the CB position. NE is playing with sub-par talent at the WR spot anyways. I believe this game will come down to us stopping their run, and not getting killed by the couple of fakes their going to run off their pre-game perceived dominance in the running game over us . Now their loss of Harrison is brutal, because a hard-hitting safety is critical in defending a passing game like ours. I think we are going to see one of the most creatively coached games we've ever seen.
This is the one reason why it's better to avoid the Colts. Miller is looking better and I'm not exactly worried about Gaffney, Jackson, Brown, and we should contain Caldwell. Hopefully, Watson is not 100 percent, though I hear he'll play.
I was just gonna say: having the Jet's CB's depleted right now almost sounds like a hopeful thing. I'm so glad New England's receivers suck...
Who is the mole inside the Jets giving out this information. He should be found and destroyed!!!!!!!!!!
agree with you there...vs. oakland he had a receiver wrapped up and was bringing him back when the whistle blew the play dead on forward progress. i was fully expecting miller to slam him down anyways, thus drawing his customary personal foul call, but he let go of the guy...good stuff
the fact that the pats lack a true #1 wr helps us in dealing with dyson being out. id much rather have him playing though...barrett should do a solid job though. as long as miller can keep his hands off the pats recievers he should be fine as well.
of course i would rather have dyson available, but im not too concerned with his absence. david barrett has done a great job all season, not just defending receivers, but also making big plays and causing turnovers. justin miller is a serviceable backup, and our passing defense will be fine. the patriots, on the other hand, are screwed without harrison
And without Dyson some really would of rather of wanted Harrison-Wayne...Hah. I'm not a huge fan of the rotating players, especially at Corner with Barrett/Miller. Once one gets in a groove and then gets subbed out? Or if one gets taken out after giving up a play would his confidence be shaken? Luckily one of them will usually be on Troy Brown, so no excuse to get burnt.
