Been trying to find the time to do some Jets mocks for a while, and finally I got a chance over the past couple hours, so here you go. I have two mocks here, first one without trades of any kind, then one where I get a bit crazy. Explanations after the picks, criticisms encouraged. MOCK ONE 1- CB Perrish Cox, OK State - Cox is my second rated corner in this draft and really is someone who should go much higher. Great coverage skills, good size, and tremendous athletic ability. Has covered a lot of great players with success, including AJ Green last season. 2- OG Mike Johnson, Alabama - Johnson was a big part of Ingram's success in the run game, quality in both run and pass blocking. Tall and agile enough to even play out at Right Tackle as well, but needs to get a bit stronger. Would be good to backup for a year. 5- OLB Lindsey Witten, UConn - Underrated passrusher with great size and athleticism. Could develop easily into the threat that the Jets sorely need, one of my favorites later on in the draft. 6- WR Antonio Brown, CMU - Far down on a lot of people's list because he's a small school system guy, but I could care less. He's fast, runs great routes, and has terrific hands. Size limits him to the slot, which is perfect. 7- DE Brandon Deaderick, Alabama - Another perfect fit in the "players I like but others don't like them as much as I do" mock. Yeah, I need to work on the title, but Deaderick is a great fit. Tall and very strong, he'd be a good guy to develop to fit the rotation at end. Still don't get why he's rated so low by most.
MOCK TWO Trade 1: Jets trade Kerry Rhodes and a 5th (via New Orleans through Philadelphia) to Dallas for Orlando Scandrick and a 4th rounder. - Dallas needs a safety that can actually play pretty bad, and Scandrick is slotted in as the third corner for a while with the emergence of Mike Jenkins. Trade 2: Jets trade #29 to the Giants for #46 and #76. Giants select Brandon Spikes at #29. 2 (46)- OG Jon Asamoah, Illinois - Definitely the 2nd best interior lineman in the draft, smart and a good athlete. He'd be a great weapon moving on the line and pulling, in addition to his ability as a straight line run blocker. 2 (61)- S Morgan Burnett, Georgia Tech - Taking advantage of the wealth of safeties in the draft, the Jets go for the one that could add the ability as a ballhawk that they'd lose in the Rhodes trade. Most guys at the top of the class are better off against the run, so if they don't get Burnett they may have to wait to fill this need. 3 (76)- OLB George Selvie, USF - A very polarizing figure for a while, his stock is starting to settle around here as a hard working guy with big potential. There are a lot of passrushers, but he's one of the few with NFL size already and great athleticism. Would be a rotational guy next year, maybe taking on a more pronounced role as the year goes on. 4- DE Mike Neal, Purdue - His stock's going to eventually get a lot higher after what he's done the past two weeks, but he's a perfect fit as a 34 end in my mind. Solidly built and powerful, he's great at the point of attack and can still move a bit. 6- WR Antonio Brown, CMU - See earlier, still my boy. 7- OT Chris Marinelli, Stanford - Developmental tackle prospect, just to see if he can hook on as a backup behind D'Brickashaw. Blah, done.
Very impressive For the first one I like Perrish Cox, also like Ghee from Wake in that slot. The other picks look solid no one I praticularly love but I couldn't complain if we had that draft wasnt Deadrick the guy who intercepted/recovered that Garrett Gilbert shovel pass? Second mock not so sure about, I'm going with hold judgment on Neal and Marinelli because I havent seen them play. I don't think our first pick should be spent on a guard, I would much rather address the corner, safety, wide receiver or pass rusher. Also Selvie stock seems to keep just falling down he wasn't that productive and from what I hear he hasnt been exactly tearing things up at the senior bowl. I guess I could live with Morgan Burnett. But I just feel we could address bigger needs earlier on
Neal is a stud, so don't worry about him. He was there at the Shrine game last week and was very good, and he's doing the same this week at the Senior Bowl. That and he's a physical monster, a massively framed 6'3 300 pounder. As for not addressing the needs quick enough, I'd really love to hear how you'd change things up. They get a starting CB in exchange for Rhodes, they get the best safety against the pass not named Berry or Thomas in Burnett, and they get a rusher with massive potential in Selvie. Receiver? They get a perfect slot guy way after he should go. And for the record, everything I've read on Selvie is that he's been very good in Mobile.
Mike Neal is very typical of a Rex Ryan DE/DT....check out the Ravens DE/DTs...Bannan...Edwards...Douglas here now...all around the same size with similar builds.
I like the 2nd one most. Johnson is better than Asamoagh IMO, but I wouldn't be angry with the pick. Selvie, Burnett, and Neal would be awesome.
I'd have to say the second draft would be ideal, but won't happen. You'll likely see the Jets do what has become custom - trade up to get the guy you want, not a bunch of guys that may develop. I do like the idea of trading Rhodes and a 5th for Scandrick. I think Scandrick is a starter in this league and just needs to be put into the right system. He's a good man cover guy and would be a nice complement opposite Revis. I also have to say that I like the top three corners in this draft (Hayden, Cox, Wilson) and while Hayden is likely out of reach being a top 5 or top 6 pick, trading up to get Cox or Wilson would be ideal. I also think our need for pass rushers will be solved in free agency for both DE and OLB with the abundance of unrestricted free agents coming out at both positions. That would free our draft up to go after the youth at corner, safety, offensive line and depth at wide receiver.
Orlando Scandrick gets burnt pretty often. Did anyone catch the first game they played against the Giants? He got abused. Dallas puts heat on QBs yet this guy still got toasted. He doesn't give up a ton of yards per catch but will give up a high percentage of catches thrown his way. Hes good in run support but if I'm trading Kerry Rhodes and a pick for a player and a pick, Orlando Scandrick wouldn't be the player I receive in return.
A few things about Scandrick. First, he's been in the league two years but he's still only 22 years old, and on top of that he left a small school after three years. First two years in the league coming from circumstances like that, I think he's been pretty good. Scandrick is incredibly athletic, and has shown a willingness to come up and be physical despite his frame. He didn't play great to start the year, but he settled into the nickel role well for Dallas, and I think he could develop into a fine corner for the Jets as soon as next season. On top of that, I think he would really respond to a system that plays almost all man coverage.
He is young so it is deff possible he could develop into a solid #2. I just don't like the idea of giving up Kerry Rhodes for a player who MIGHT be good one day unless the picks we exchange is heavily in our favor. Besides that trade I like your mock draft especially Kyle Wilson hopefully he doesn't improve his stock too much leading up to the draft.
On the second draft...Scandrick would be a pretty nice return on Rhodes. So yea...I think I'd go with #2. Don't really want Asamoah, but he's a good player. Could be BPA OL I guess...
