Browns announce Brian Hoyer as the starting QB. Hoyer has a really nice story good for him!!! Any thoughts?
It's only delaying the inevitable. Hoyer's a career backup. He'll have a few bright spots and struggles too. The fans and media will be calling for Johnny. I'd give Hoyer about 4 games before the switch happens.
Hoyer was very steady when he got those starts last season. His bad luck that when he finally got his shot he was injured. Johnny has the WOW factor and that's why everyone is always talking about him. On the field and off. But so far in the exhibition games he hasn't had it. If he did he would have won the job.
They couldn't start Manziel Week 1. He's not ready. Plus if they are without Gordon its gonna get ugly quick. By starting Hoyer people will spend the first 2 weeks (Manziel will get his first start Week 3 at home vs the Ravens , for an 0-2 Browns team) expecting him to be the savior instead of crushing him for getting off to a shitty start.
Manziel probably isn't ready anyway. I think it'll help Manziel mentally if he's not handed the starting job right away, and it might make him work harder. By October, if they're 1-3 or whatever, the fan base will really be clamoring for Johnny Football and at that point they'll probably put him in as the new starter. I'd expect him to struggle initially. If Pettine is able to give the Browns a very good defense, Manziel won't have to do that much and maybe he can give them some hope. I just don't know if he's mature enough to put in the work he'll need to put in to be decent/good at the pro level.
