Besides Wilkerson (2011), Richardson (2013) & Leonard Williams (2015), ---- it sickens me (as a draftnik) how little production we’ve gotten & are currently getting from our 1st & 2nd round draft picks. Granted, - some are injured, but you get the picture. It’s amazing once you put it all down on paper & how it goes from year to year to year. Some spots of a hit from time to time. But CLEARLY, - this is an example of how NOT TO DRAFT. All thanks to Terry Bradway / John Idzik / Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum. 2015 2 Devin Smith (not contributing a lot - wish he could be - still, a rookie) 2014 1 Calvin Pryor injured 2 Jace Amaro IR – completely missed the 2015 season 3 Dexter McDougle Plays in our dime D (I think), but mostly special teams contribution 2013 1 Dee Milliner IR / always hurt / practically zero production over 40 games. 2 Geno Smith Backup --- might not ever suit up again for us. 2012 1 Quinton Coples Practically a backup at this point. Diminishing reps. 2 Stephen Hill Couldn’t catch. Not on team ---- out of football. 2011 2 Pick was traded to San Diego for Antonio Cromartie his first time around with the team. 2010 1 Kyle Wilson Lousy for a 1st round pick. But not on team. 2 Vladimir Ducasse Zero production ---- not on team. 2009 1 Mark Sanchez Not on the team anymore. Thats all I got to say about that. 2 We didn’t have one – was used to trade up for Sanchez (who is not on the team anymore). 2008 1 Vernon Gholston Garbage. 6th overall & got nothing in return. Out of football. 1 Dustin Keller Not on team, - out of football 2007 1 Darrelle Revis 2 David Harris 2006 1 D’Brickashaw Ferguson 1 Nick Mangold By comparison, - the always competitive Green Bay Packers’ roster is comprised entirely of draft picks.
Projects, combine warriors and reaches for need. That's the Jets last decade and a half of drafting with a few really good picks in between, some of which were trades up to make. When the Jets have been decent it's because Woody Johnson has been willing to open up the wallet and pay for veteran free agents in clumps to supplement the few really good picks the Jets have made. Then the vets age out and we start over again. Note that the Jets are one of the few teams for whom the vet free agency plan produces some results, likely because the signings come in spurts and are self-reinforcing as a result. Getting one big name free agent means nothing but if you sign 4 at once, particularly if several of them slot in together you're in much better shape. If you add in a few trades you can get near critical mass even though you are unlikely to get over the top.
2oo5 1 Mike Nugent (a kicker?) 2 Justin Miller 2oo3 1 Dwayne Robertson (cost two firsts to move up) 2 Victor Hobson (another Big Ten bust) 2002 1 Bryan Thomas (solid player but not good enough to forget the HOF'er picked right behind him) 2 Jon McGraw
It's really amazing that a professional football organization actually selected a kicker in the first round.
Interesting that the 2006 and 2007 picks were somewhat influenced by Mangini, hit on all 4 early picks.
Bad GMs=Terrible drafts=terrible teams and losing records Better Management=The road to recovery So let's dwell on now and the future. Within a couple of years there will be player turnover and improvement IMO
They are competitive because of Rodgers. Put most other QBs there and they won't have nearly the same success.
Leo Williams is a good pick ideally we rightfully select Amari Cooler since we should have finished 0-4 instead of 2-2 last season, but I understand grown men having pride not really caring about draft positioning at the time trying to win a game. Hopefully this regime will be better, I didn't love the Smith pick at the time, i would have taken DGB or Randy Gregory. Lorenzo Mauldin has played very and I look for Bryce and Jarvis(especially) to compete for a starting spot next year. I remain optimistic, year 2 and especially year 3 will give us a better idea of how good Mac and Bowles are
We need to start drafting tackles, a better wide receiver than Devin and a replacement ILB that can replace Demario Davis and learn from Harris before he retires.
Round 2 has been awful for the Jets!!! Going back all the way back to 1977 the best Rd 2 picks: Wesley Walker 77 Mark Gastineau 78 Johnny Hector 83 Dennis Byrd 89 David Harris 07
Cooper was the player I wanted, but he wasn't going to fall to #6, Williams was the right choice. Following the Buckeyes, I can't say I was thrilled with the Devin Smith pick, I knew he would be a project and take time to develop. I will say one thing, he is a really solid special teams player getting down field on coverage. That fumble in the Bill's game was real disappointing. If I wanted a project, I would have drafted Jake Fisher in Rd 2, his upside at OT is very high and could be a future replacement for Brick. Fisher is very athletic and will be a future star for the Bengals. I wanted no part of DGB, but would have taken Gregory in Rd 2. Probably the best choice so far in Rd 2 is Ronald Darby for Buffalo, he's playing very well. Most of Rd 2 the jury is still out, nothing too special so far. Ameer Abdullah is also playing solid.
Eh, he's been OK - when we played Ameer in the preseason - dude was killing us. So far this season he's been killing his team with fumbles, but does make an explosive play every now and then. Duke Johnson has been better IMO.
I believe Abdullah has only lost one fumble, he really is going to be only a situational player that sparks the team and makes a big play, something the Jets need. Johnson is having a nice year, but I was talking about 2nd rounders. Duke was a steal in Rd 3.
