Contrary to belief around here, the rest of the league isn't latched onto the Ryans' hind parts like most Jets fans / Woody Johnson is. He's not getting a job because he's a loose cannon..(even more so than Rex) because he's strictly a coordinator and because he's even a little overrated as a coordinator. Some people are just suited to be a coordinator and that's fine.
I agree that he is more of a coordinator than a HC. But again at some point, one team will become desperate and give him a try. Maybe not this year but if he puts a good defense in New Orleans next year as well, he can find a HC job in 2015.
Rex would have gotten a job immediately had we been foolish enough to fire him but that doesn't mean Rob will be a top HC like his brother. Rob's Ds have not been as good though if NO can win this week it will really raise his profile and give him a shot but his long hair, wilder attitude has been holding him back too. People think he is a crazier version than rex.
He's not even getting a sniff in a year where there are more openings than ever. He is never gonna get a HC job in the NFL. He's not even as good a DC as Rex.
He'll probably need a couple more solid years as a DC but he got a raw deal in Dallas and has done wonders in New Orleans. He is a great defensive mind.
The only team likely to have given Rob Ryan a shot was Al Davis Raiders. Al's dead and so are Rob Ryan's chances to be the head coach of an NFL franchise.
I think Robs stock is rising. Especially considering the drop off the Dallas D had and the rise the Saints had. If the Saints put together a Super Bowl he probably will get a HC job.
Dallas D went from bad to worse, not good to bad. And The Saints are better this year but hardly a great Defense.
The Saints were the worst D in the league by far last year. They were historically bad in fact. Ryan took on that challenge, with only very limited room to improve in FA and the draft, while also trying to incorporate a scheme change to a 3-4 base. His only real scheme acquisition, Butler, tore his ACL in the preseason. Despite those challenges, the D improved from historically bad to top 5 in league. We are talking a reduction of over 130yds a game on avg. That is nothing short of amazing what he's done in NO. In terms of Dallas, he took on that job after the team was by far worst in the league against the pass. He vastly improved that D, despite pulling LB's off the street due to a rash of injuries. It was another very good immediate turnaround. Jerry Jones firing him in favor of Kiffin was an epic fail. Dallas has taken over the Saints previous title of worst D in the league, and that firing probably cost the Cowboys a playoff slot this year. As a D coordinator, Ryan is well established. I don't see HC opportunities knocking though. He is a bit wild, and many owners might see it as a big risk to entrust their team to someone like Rob. Nothing wrong with being a DC. I think he should just continue building on that solid reputation, and not worry about becoming a HC.
He's moved around and produced average Defenses in Oakland, Clevelend, Dallas, and New Orleans. had one good year in Oakland and a good one this year.
