Let's go back to '06 (Tanny's first year as GM)

    2006
    Brick
    Mangold
    Clemens
    Schlegel
    E. Smith
    B. Smith
    Leon Washington
    Jason Pociask
    Drew Coleman
    Titus Adams

Analysis: A+. One of the best drafts in the history of the franchise. Two all-pros, a jack of all trades player (Smith), special teams ace/RB at the time in Leon, and two quality role players (Smith and Coleman)

    2007
    Revis
    Harris
    Bender
    Stuckey

Analysis: A-. Best CB in the NFL and at worst a top 7 ILB in Harris. Didn't give it an A because of lack of picks not getting enough depth.

    2008
    Gholston
    Keller
    Lowery
    Ainge
    Henry
    Garner

Analysis: D+. Lowery was a good nickel CB. Keller is a top 15 TE. One of the biggest whiffs in the history of the franchise a la Gholston. Picking Ainge with all this drug problems didn't make us look too good either. D+ might be a little tough since we got some value out of the draft, but to get so little value at #6 overall goes a long way IMO.

    2009
    Sanchez
    Greene
    Slauson

Analysis: B. All three are starters for the Jets 4 years later. None are pro bowlers, but all have showed the ability to be solid starters in this league moving forward.

    2010
    Wilson
    Ducasse
    McKnight
    Conner

Analysis: C+. I think Wilson is a very underrated player (only 2 yrs in) would be a #2 CB on a few teams in the NFL. McKnight was the best KR in the NFL last year. Conner is a starting FB and good ST player. No stars here, not as good of a draft as '09, but again, not terrible by any means.

    2011
    Wilkerson
    Ellis
    Powell
    Kerley
    McElroy
    McKnight

Analysis: Incomplete. Wilkerson looks like he will be a solid pro, as does Kerley. I don't know what to make of Ellis yet.

Having 10 picks feels good, even though most are in the later rounds. Depth is what we need, and depth is what we can get. Having a lot of picks also puts us at an advantage where we'll be getting a lot of calls from other teams with offers to move up/down in the later rounds.

MartyMark is pretty fair except I would give 2010 a C- or D, Wilson is only a nickle back and because of that we had to re-sign Cromartie. Ducasse appears to be a total mess.

MarkyMark did a good job. I would even say that 2010 is still up for consideration just because of the Vlad ?

Thanks. That's fair. They say you can't judge a draft class for at least 3 years. 2010 could get an incomplete, but what's the fun in that? Ducasse's performance this year definitely can swing that draft a full letter grade in either direction.

Ya, 2010 I found the hardest to grade. Vlad really is an incomplete at this point. The other 3 players all play a decent size role with this team. I guess I was a little generous because I see potential in McKnight (complimentary back) and Wilson as starters, but are blocked by better players in front of them.

    I would say:

2006: A+ (two all pro OL, and a ton of quality depth)
2007: A+ (picked up our two best defensive players, Stuckey was later used as part of the package to acquire Braylon)
2008: D- (our best pick was Keller, but trading up to get him cost us the ability to pick up the likes of Ray Rice and Matt Forte in the second)
2009: B/B+ (the picks we gave up for Mark amounted to jack shit.. picked up our franchise QB and a very good running back, as well as a tough, quality OL)
2010: C (very average on paper, but this grade will change for better or worse depending on how Vlad and Wilson turn out)
2011: B- (did not reach on any of our top picks, injected youth into our D-line and got a quality slot WR. This grade is also very fluid, depending on how Mo and Ellis do with a full offseason)

Total= B. The last two drafts have been very mediocre in terms of picking up impact players, though Tanny has done a decent job filling out the depth chart. Another draft like 2008 could set this franchise back a few years, whereas a repeat of 06/07 could put this team back near the top of the AFC.

I would rate 07 higher than the rest...why? When u hit on 2/4 picks that's 50 percent success And teams would kill for that in any given draft. And again revis and Harris are hits, big hits.

Second would be the 06 draft but the picks of brick and mangold don't impress me. They were easy picks base on where they were slotted and team needs. The jets could have had blinders on and still made the picks. The money picks in 06 were Washington and brad smith. Even Eric smith was a decent shot.

The remaining drafts appear to be less than adequate to average. So there are no studs at their respective positions drafted in the last 4 years.

That has to change starting thursday

B ... some big hits, some big misses, but all in all average.

I rated on what round and pick they were making Mangold the best pick and Gholston
    a huge miss.

Sanchez for being a #5 overall and someone who could be riding the pine by mid season doesn't rate higher than an individual C in my book and that is only because of a couple good playoff games.

Also, I don't rate any RB we drafted as great or even very good, and as a whole the group would be only a B rating.

After adding Clemens and Ducasse to the mix as big 2nd round misses, a B overall is more than fair.

I just hope we dont pull off Gholston part 2 with our 1st round pick this year because we seem to be looking to draft the same position (people are saying that Coples could be a bust. hope we stay away)

our 06 and 07 drafts were pivotal to our success without a doubt. I really hope Mo Wilk becomes a stud this year. He definitely has a shit ton of potential. It just sucks we are looking to draft another DE with our 1st rounder this year. It could be worth it tho if we get the right guy.

That's a really interesting article, thanks! I guess we'd better be pretty high on the efficiency list, given Tannenbaum's philosophy of giving up sheer numbers of picks for a greater certainty of getting the guys we want. In other words, it looks like (according to that article from 05-09) we "hit" significantly more than the average NFL team, but if we had less picks overall, the question is did we hit often enough to make up for the smaller number of picks.

Regarding 06, and as much as I am a Mangold fan, and to a lesser extent Ferguson, I can't give that draft an A+. The reason is that Schlegel sucked from day one, and you have to recognize the Jets had two first round picks going in. Yeah, they hit on both, but it's not like they got those two guys with a standard number of picks. The Clemens pick was also problematic, perhaps having more to do with the team's failure to properly use and develop him later, so I can see how that was not all on the pick itself, and many had Clemens highly rated. Still, I think an A- is more reasonable.

2007 was also problematic for a different reason. While it brought Revis and Harris, it did so by bundling picks, which is one of the reasons why the Jets have such little depth. Bender also sucked. I would also give that year an A-. That consideration also applies to 2009 in bundling to trade up to the fifth pick.

2009 at a B? Too generous. Given what it took to get Sanchez, and what mediocre performance Green has shown, I'd rate it at a C-, even D+.

    2010 I give a D+.

'06-It's impossible to hit on every pick. Most teams are satisfied if 50+% of their picks become starters, and the player you select to be blue chippers end up being just that. If you go in with that narrow mindset, it's tough to objectively measure a draft. Difference between an A+/A- is all negligible IMO. The point is it's one of the best drafts in the history of the franchise. Brick at 4 might have been a lock, but to get Mangold (without question the best C in the NFL) at 29 goes a long way.

2009-Sanchez has assisted in taking us to two AFC East champ games in his first 2 years. Greene hasn't had a bad year in the NFL in 3 seasons. Slauson was an incredible value pick. Also keep in mind what we gave up to get Sanchez; practically nothing unless you have a hard on for Ratliff and Elam.

2010-All 4 of those players either start or offer great contributions. A D+ draft is littered with busts and JAGs. I fail to see how that's a D+ esp when you consider where we were picking.

I saw this too. Its all in the "grading system" I suppose. Forbes system apparently ranks us pretty high based upon things like starting time. But the Jets have been very lucky lately in terms of health of players. So starting time remains high and depth is not tested as much.

Its my opinion that the depth on the team or lack there of, is really whats at issue with the Jets drafts of late.

I don't disagree with your general statements in the first paragraph. I was merely moving 2006 down to an A or A-. No way an A+ with Schegel, but not only that since like I said they went in with two first round picks, so to say they came out with Mangold and Ferguson, yeah they hit but it's not like they got those guys with "normal" draft picks.

Regarding 2009, the problem as I mentioned is lack of depth on this team. That year the Jets bundled picks and ended up with two rather mediocre starters. We can debate Sanchez all day, but Green is just not all that good. I didn't say he's a bust.

2010 includes VD, which remains a totally wasted pick. I don't see what "great contributions" he has made, not by any stretch. Wilson is a nickel back - I expect more from a first round pick. McKnight is not a bust, but after two years he's hardly a solid player, either. And Conner totally underwhelms me. If you want we can give them a C- for that year. You got it.

Forbes might give us a high rating but if they do this on a rolling basis, we will start to plummet. 2006/07 were exceptional, not much since then.
