John Idzik created a new philosophy once he was hired 2 years ago as GM:

Developing players from the draft, making or not making key FA deals, avoiding expensive long term contracts, supporting Geno Smith and giving him more weapons, one or two year "show me" contracts, saving the money to pay the vets that deserve it eg Kerley, M Wilkerson, trying to draft a CB, keeping expenses under our salary cap, hiring a WCO offensive coordinator, staying with the same coach, in general building a contending team versus immediate quick fix expensive impact players.

Do the Jets resemble the next Seattle? Is Geno our Russel Wilson? Are we good enough to make the playoffs right now with this model in place? Do you think we need to mimic Seattle at all? I'am thinking being like The Seahawks is a good thing but like to know your thoughts.

This post speaks to where we are going as a team in general and whether you are satisfied with the progress to a SB.

Take a plane trip to Antartica from J.F.K. airport, that's how far the Jets are from being like Seatlle.Seatlle has all areas of the ball covered, special teams, offense, defense etc. With the corners we have and questions still remaining about Geno and the WRs we are pretty far away in my opinion from being Seatlle. But I think we can make the playoffs if Geno doesn't turn the ball over like its his job

I don't like this Seattle East idea. I just to want a consistent playoff team whether it be the Baltimore, Indy, or Seattle approach.

We need to build a successful franchise with the pieces we have now. While yes Idzik is using a more conservative approach than Tannebaum used, we need to be able adapt to what we have. Spending all the time and trading the future for now will catch up to you. And if Idizik is around here for a while, he will need to change and adapt to what the team needs. Sometimes you can balance and spend for now if you have been building conservatively and vice versa.

But to answer the question, it rides on Milliner and Geno right now. Without Geno stepping up, we aren't going to get the post out of the CJ2K, Ivory, Decker, and Amaro moves. We aren't going to get the most out of potential sleepers like Gates, Salas, and Saunders. Defensively, if the secondary is broken beyond repair, then it doesn't matter if DL sends 3 people to the Pro Bowl if the teams just pick us apart with short passes to receivers we cannot cover.

I think in the couple years Idizik has been here, he is making strides in the right direction and definitely has more of vision towards the future than Tannebaum had near the end of his tenure. Granted, Tanny left the Jets in a rough spot where the only direction to go was up. I mostly like what he has done but I guess this year will give us a real hard look at what Idzik missed on and if his first draft will end up bringing all the rewards it should for the Jets.

Seattle West wasn't built in 1 season and 1 off-season. Building a competitive team, particularly through the draft, takes some time. The Jets had a solid nucleus to work with and they've added some talent in the past 2 drafts. In order to be Seattle East we need Idzik to hit on some late rounders who become pro bowlers. I don't see that in his first two drafts but I'll gladly admit I'm wrong if it happens.

It's the approach that's similar, not the result. Any two teams using the same approach will still likely end up with different results because different players are available in the draft, different positions develop, different coaching, etc. We are not gonna be a carbon copy of Seattle, although some things will be similar, like lots of young players competing for positions.

Geno is a very different player from Wilson. Obviously Wilson is a lot more accomplished now, with Geno having a terrible rookie season, but even in terms of how they play, Wilson is a scrambler who likes to throw on the run, Geno runs to run, and is generally a pocket passer. Seattle secondary is their strength on defense, with us it's a weakness right now, and our strength is up front.

However, overall, I think we as fans have to be pleased where the Jets are at in Idzik's second year. We might or might not make the playoffs this year, but overall, our youth and talent are definitely increasing, and with some key pieces added or developing either this year or the next, we can be a very good team. This is a far cry from where we were a couple of years back.

Well considering the strength of the Hawks is their secondary i think we are far away...

I think San Fran is a better comparison to where we are and where we are headed.

Their front 7 is their strength our front 7 is our strength.
Their secondary is good not great ours is ok not good.
Kap and Geno both have big arms that can pick up nice yards with their feet.
Gore and CJ2K are close and benefit from a heavy run game.
Decker and Crabtree are similar sure handed receivers.
Their OL has 2 pro bowlers and so does ours.

Not close, Seattle's team is probably the most strongest unit we have seen in the NFL in a very long team, best Super Bowl Champion in years....

Pretty far. We are 3 secondary players, a couple of offensive lineman,a smarter more poised QB away from showing much a resemblance and a couple of years experience. 2009-2010 we were a lot more like Seattle minus having a NFL caliber QB.

You probably heard that from all the trolls over at gamefaqs, the same trolls who said I claimed to be the inspiration for Captain America.

Its not what I said at all, stop listening to trolls and haters than think they knew all about me, that think they have all the answers.

i have no idea what you are talking about with "gamefaqs"
i am speaking of the 5 years of posts i seen from you here. this is my last post on the subject though. sorry for derailing the thread momentarily.

as far as seattle east, they didn't come up with some new innovative method on how to build a championship. they hit on some draft picks signed the right f.a.'s and made a run before the rookie deals all came due.so how are close are we? depends on geno
