It appears Holmes is the first priority for Tannenbaum, and I guess you can't really blame him after the success him and Sanchez had together in only 12 regular season games, but I do have some concerns with holding onto Holmes. I also hope this serves to drive down the price of Edwards. If Holmes becomes too expensive to retain, I think Edwards fits fine as this teams number 1 receiver. Maybe as Sanchez continues to develop we will be able to better utilize all our weapons on offense, but I didn't like how Keller seemed to be phased out after Holmes came in. I think this offense runs pretty well with a 2 WR set, using Keller over the middle with an extra blocking TE or FB to pave the way for Greene. I think we all expect Greene to become more of a featured back next year so a power running game will be important. I think Cotchery fits well as a #2... even with his uncharacteristically high number of drops last year he's still one of the most underrated WRs in the league. I think it really comes down to where they think Sanchez is in his development, and how good they think he can be. If they are comfortable with him airing it out some more, Holmes is probably the better option. He's more explosive, will create more separation, and can really turn this offense into a dangerous unit. If Sanchez isn't where the CS wants him to be, or if we want to go the more conservative route and rely on our running game and defense to win us a lot of games, then Edwards is probably the better option. He's a safer target over the middle, on slants, and with jump balls. He's a better blocker if we want to rely on the running game. I think he might be a better influence than Holmes as well, but that is pure speculation on my part. Holmes got great experience with the Steelers and seems to be a good teacher as well... I just get the sense he's got that WR diva in him where as Edwards seems more like a hard worker and company man. Vague, I know, but just a sense I got that I figured I would add to the discussion. I realize we've had the Holmes vs Edwards discussion plenty already, but I think what we do with our receiving corps will affect a lot of things next year.
It seems odd to me that the Jets would let information like this out to the public. Why would they want Holmes to know that if they're about to negotiate with him?
That's a really good point. It doesn't surprise me though, I agree with the Jets with him being out most dangerous offensive weapon. Good things happen when he gets the ball in his hands, I have been all for this guy being resigned before anyone else for a while.
Sounds like conflicting information to me, I thought Harris was the top priority with or without the franchise tag.
no.harris is in the bag.he has the tag and will be back next year.as far as who else will be returning holmes is the priority.
My point is that I wouldn't take this for face value, whether it was actually said by someone in the Jets organization or if lardo made it up himself.
Because I'm still convinced they're currently negotiating with Edwards. Harris gets the tag. Holmes is #1 priority. Good, scare tactic negotiating tools if you're trying to get Edwards to sign a bargain extension before the end of the league year and the lockout.
This is exactly what I'm hoping is the case. That's why I mentioned I hoped it would drive down the cost of Edwards. If we can put it into his and other teams heads that he might not be a #1 receiver we might be able to sign him for a reasonable amount.
I always think that as well. Why show your hand and give him leverage to hang you up for more $$? Maybe it's people within the organization leaking info to the media for $$.
Sorry, made my last post before I read this. That is very logical. Must be why I'm a sh*t poker player.
I don't put much stock in any of these "reports".. it's obvious Holmes is going to be the team's #1 priority. Any reporter can just put out an article saying they have unnamed sources or are "hearing whispers" that Holmes is the top priority, because more than likely that's going to be the case. They're probably just taking educated guesses. None of this means anything until after the CBA is reached and we see what we have to work with.
That was my thought as well...... Sign Edwards first, he's the cheaper of the two. Once you have BE locked up, then go after Holmes from a stronger position.
Another reason why we should be saying that Holmes is our top priority is that he'll probably be the most difficult to retain. Edwards and Cromartie have both expressed a desire to return. Holmes has been noncommital as of this post.
So how does not franchising Holmes show he's the number one priority? They have one franchise tag that they can use to keep one player. They used it, but they didn't use it on Holmes. He's pretty clearly not the top priority. EDIT: Now if you're saying he's the number one priority now that Harris is tagged, sure, I can buy that.
Maybe the franchise number for inside linebackers is less than the number for wrs..plus Harris is one of the 5 best ilbs while Holmes is not one of the 5 best wrs
