Did anyone watch last night? I watched a little and saw the new kickoffs. I think its so ridiculous you need a rulebook out just to watch them return a kick and know what they can and can't do.
I didn't watch but saw a little of buzz around the kick off rule on twitter this morning. Apparently it will now fall on coaches to scheme things properly. Also I heard it will be impossible to pin the teams down as each kick returner expected to cross the 20 yard line easily. What did you see? Enlighten us Mr Brownging Nagle the football guru
the kicker is way back and the kick returner is way down by the goal line. Both teams standing right in front of each other, maybe at the 30 yard line? on the returner side. From the goal line to the 20 is the "landing zone" (I feel ridiculous even describing that), but ESPN overlayed a graphic showing where the ball needs to be kicked to. nobody is allowed to move until the returner catches the ball, which resulted in penalties last night, and then yeah he runs it to the 20 easily where by they all converge. I didnt watch the whole game but from what I watched they all made it to the 20 super easy and then not much else -- I would just instruct the kicker to boot it out the back of the end zone every time, but especially if you have the lead. there's not much benefit/chance of trying to get the returner any closer and it reduces the risk of a return. Making the whole thing, and all the rules, moot
