Watching the abysmal special teams play last night of course made me miss our wonderful special teams coach Mike Westhoff as I'm sure many of you did. I thought back to the year we hired Rex, and the fact that Westhoff asked to be interviewed for the job back then. At the time, he seemed to me to be too old for the job but I was probably biased in my opinion by his cane, and the issues he was battling with his leg (Bone cancer, right?) I was very happy he stayed on with Rex after being denied the opportunity to have the top job. I never thought about it again until after the Rex era ended, but now I look back and wonder how Mike Westhoff might have fared as Jets head coach? Thoughts?
As great a coach as he is, he’s too irascible to be a head coach and the nominal face of a team. He’d likely be a great HC in terms of X’s and O’s but I’m reality is no one is ever hiring him to be an HC. I think Rex killed that dog.
I always assumed he wasn't competent for the job considering I never even heard of him being considered for an OC or DC position. Then again judging from past hirings for the most part our front office may not have been competent enough to make that decision lol. He always came off as a less concerned with food version of rex
I think this is really it. He also wasn’t shy about saying undiplomatic things about the way the team was run. If there is no investment in the bottom of the roster because you’re overpaying your secondary, he’ll let you know about it.
I wanted Westhoff to get the HC job back in 2008. The man is an encyclopedia of football. HIs football acumen rivals Belicheck.
not sure if he would've done well as a HC ... I mean how come no other team asked to interview him for a HC spot?
Sorry guys ...irascible personality is WHAT this team needs..not a wishy washy bump on a log At least Westoff has a brain in his head and will attract a better CS not mention elavating special teams play Unless theirs an Offensive guru out out there..SIGN THIS BEAST
that was after he had to coach for us under the tuna and carroll bombed. kraft interviewed him based on his previous stint in there under the tuna. and that was long after he left the browns. so, you could have asked the same question bout him during that time period.
at the end of the day, he achieved something Westhoff did not. BB got an interview and the job, Westhoff did not.
I prefer a young offensive coordinator who has developed a QB like John DeFilippo if Bowles gets canned. Edit: Didn't read the OP's entire post and thought he was talking about now. It would've been an intriguing choice in 2008.
meanwhile, he hopes they get 6 guys in front of him to play o-line who are much better than below average.
