It's basically screaming: WHY COULDN'T THE COLTS WIN THIS GAME, THEY WERE SO GOOD THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO DOMINATE. Then of course they had to do a whole segment on Johnny Unitas coming in and trying to save the day which he failed to do. Hardly gave the Jets credit at all, made it seem like the Colts beat themselves. Sickening...... There's part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm_Kz9UfRAo&feature=related
I actually owned it on VHS the way it originally aired. It really comes down to the fact that the Colts that year, before the SB, were considered to be the greatest team of all time. They lost 1 game all year (against the Browns), but avenged that in the NFL title game by wiping their asses with them 35-0. The Colts beat their opponents by an average of 18 per game which is still a record in the modern era. They were playing a team from a league which was viewed as VASTLY inferior. The Jets deserve all the credit in the world, but from a non Jets fan point of view, the Colts performance could be viewed as the biggest Championship game choke job of all time, as opposed to the greatest upset of all time. Can't really blame anyone at the time for wondering how the hell they were losing that game. Gerry Philbin summed it up well in an interview once. He said when Namath guaranteed the win, if the Colts were as good as they thought they were they should have gotten pissed and beat the shit out of the Jets, but they didn't do it.
Just another sidenote: If you get the chance, watch "America's Game" on NFL Network where they review the Colts Super Bowl V victory. Every Colt they interview is stuck, not on winning SB V, but rather how they lost SB III. They almost seem sad. They barely care that they won because they feel they should have had 2 SB victories at that point. I've seen most of the "America's Game" SB reviews (including saving the '68 Jets one), and the SB V show stands out due to how upset the Colts are over losing SB III.
This. The first time I watched it I thought I'd tuned into the Superbowl III episode. You can see why they are upset though, it was the worst game possible for Earl Morrall to shit the bed in.
saw it prefer my taped version of the original NBC broadcast with Gowdy, Derogatis and cigarette commercials
