Osweiler is not doing well and O'Brien is certainly unhappy. I am wondering if Texans did not sign Osweiler during the off season, and drafted Hackenberg in 2nd round (or so), will they possibly do better than now - since O'Brien is familiar with Hackenberg (and vice versa)? Thoughts?? "Texans coach Bill O'Brien said he hasn't considered benching Brock Osweiler. There's no time like the present. Osweiler was depressingly bad in Monday's loss to the Broncos, making zero plays and playing without courage. Osweiler didn't even consider all but the safest throws. He has eight touchdowns in seven games, which would be great if this were the '70s. We're seeing why Osweiler couldn't hold off a decrepit Peyton Manning last season. Osweiler might only have 1-2 more games like last night in the pipe before O'Brien is forced to consider Tom Savage" ~ Rotoworld
He was playing against one of the best, if not the best, defense in the league right now. Weird game in some ways. Turnovers by the Texans told the tale.
Hackenbeg wouldn't be playing for any NFL franchise at this point. He has to drastically improve his accuracy if he ever wants to be a successful NFL quarterback. The frustrating part is that all of the physical attributes are there and the surprising part is that the brain and leadership qualities seem to be there as well. Accuracy is extremely hard to improve on, but a lot of it can stem from poor fundamentals, and bad footwork. Footwork is vastly underrated for NFL quarterbacks. If your feet aren't under you, your body is going to be positioned in the wrong place for a follow through and the ball will not go where your arm wants it to go. There's still a lot of upside for him, specifically when thinking about the fact that he has experience and some mastery of one year in a pro-style offense. He should be ready to start taking the leap into NFL snaps by mid season next year. I'm not making the comparison but people forget how bad Aaron Rodgers fundamentals were coming out of college. He held the ball extremely high in college like most Jeff Tedford coached quarterbacks do and even in looking back on highlight tapes he did not step into throws or follow through. Relied a lot on the lightning quick release that comes from holding the ball that high. This is a quarterback starts right away league yet the Packers worked with him to make him a pro-quarterback. I'm glad we're having patience with the kid. As far as Osweiler is concerned, I'm glad we didn't throw a ton of money at him. He's an athletic guy, but his size makes him very lumbering in the pocket. I can't fault him for last night, but despite the big arm he doesn't throw the ball well down the field at all and doesn't read the defense well past five yards within the LOS. He looks like he takes shots down field when the situation says he should rather than taking shots when it's there. He threw the ball down the sideline a lot last night in double coverage just for the sake of doing it. There's also a reason Denver went back to noodle arm Peyton Manning because despite his physical limitations he continued to put the offense in the correct play. The San Diego prime time game comes to mind when he kept checking to the correct running play and they won the second half despite the fact that he wasn't pushing the ball down field.
I have no clue as to why the op is making comparisons of Osweiler and Hack. What does one have to to do with the other? This is so ridiculously hypothetical, it's like saying what if the Jets didn't fire Rex Ryan?
In two years Hackenberg will be playing the outfield with Tebow for the NY Mets AA Ball in Binghamton.
Hackenberg is still only 21 years old. Osweiler is in his 5th season and he is the same age as Bryce Petty who is in his second (25)
I don't think much of Osweiler, especially since Hopkins is on my fantasy team, but Osweiler should've stayed in DEN with a familiar offense. Offense was made for Osweiler to succeed. Hopefully Hack has success here, but it starts with preparation and that's getting meaningful reps in practice. It also helps to have the same system implemented, and I hope Gailey and Kevin Patullo are here for the long-run. Should be a key off-season as they are working to fix his mechanic issues. You fire a coach now, and that sets back Petty and Hack.
I guess this is what to expect on here when your season is over in October. We need to find a real QB in the draft. If we're picking in the top 5 or top 10, I'm sure there will be one there. Hackenberg is not the answer. Another bad Mac pick.
Quick question: How do you know how Hackenberg is doing in practice? Have you seen him play since the pre-season? I mean, it's been a few months now and in the pre-season he was most likely still struggling with learning the playbook. Just curious.
Again, how would you know how Hackenberg is doing in practice? Just curious. Have you seen him play since the last pre-season game? It's a pretty big leap to think he's a bust when you haven't even seen the player in months. What if someone wanted to tell your boss to let you go and they had no idea what you had been doing for months and didn't even work at your company. I guess a lot of people like to bash players without any real info.
Amidst all this quarterback controversy, his name hasn't come up once and they haven't even thought about activating him. Our starting quarterback just got replaced by a player who eventually tore his ACL,and then called out the entire franchise in a post-game press conference. If he was anywhere near ready, they'd think about activating him, no?
To be fair, I doubt he's gotten any reps in practice since training camp. It is hard enough to get the 2nd QB some reps. SO therefore Hackenberg has been standing around since Sept 1st, of course he's not anywhere near ready and they wouldn't think about activating him
He's been getting the bulk of the scouting team reps. The only real benefit to that is reading NFL defenses in practice. Hack isn't getting into the Jets playbook on the field per say. We have no idea how he's progressed since being out there with a bunch of camp bodies in that preseason game. You are correct.
Actually, while Petty was injured, Hack was handling the scout team reps and there was an article or discussion in a thread on this site where it was stated that Mac was trying to accelerate his development, perhaps over Petty.
