That's right. WE ARE!! Fewest yards allowed through 5 games.. including teams that have had their bye week.
thats really awesome, i said before the season started to my friends this team could have the best defense in the nfl
My assessment of the Jets D: They have an identity for quarters 1-3, but need to better themselves in the 4th too. I love our D a whole lot, just saying they can truly remain atop the league when they close out games without stress.
We are 17th in the NFL in points allowed. which is much more important then yards allowed. especially when you consider we have turned it over a ton giving our opponents a short field so often. We are 28th in takeaways wouldnt go beating our chests just yet. especially having faced: Freeman, Manuel, Locker/Fitzpatrick, Brady(sucking so far with his weapons out).
I think we were first prior to the game. I believe Houston is first total yards allowed after 5 games.
The defense needs a breather every now and again like they do every year and we wouldn't see the dropoff in the 4th quarter. They don't give up the big plays until there are 3-4 scrubs on the field while the other guys are totally gassed. When 96, 91, 94, 98, 52, 56 are all on the field this stuff doesn't happen. Again, no. When you consider we turned it over a ton giving opponents a short field it follows that it's no fucking surprise the defense is underperforming in points allowed.
you managed to argue against your own point right there. Points allowed is NOT much more important. It is a team stat. If the O or ST gives up a TD, it counts. If the O or ST turns the ball over, and the D goes 3 and out, yielding a FG, it counts. When the yds allowed is excellent, but points are not, its the clearest indicator in the world one of the other phases is failing on field position, turnovers, or giving up scores. That's why D's are ranked by yds. I'll agree on the takeaway criticism though. That has to improve to be a dominant D.
When you give the opponents offense a short field and they walk away with points you are making your defenses ypg average go down as well. They don't have a chance to move the ball more than 30-40 yards a drive because thats all the field they're given. Yards/game is a crappy stat. Redzone defense, pts/game and forced turnovers are what actually matter. If your opponent can methodically move the ball on a 40 yard field and score there is nothing saying they can't move it on an 80 yard field and make your defense ypg average look worse. Kansas, New Orleans, Indy, Seattle, NE, etc. are all currently posting great defensive statistics. RZ, TO, 4th Down, scoring, etc.
I think the guy just meant points allowed are what matters, because that's what determines who wins, not yards. But yes, for measuring DEFENSE, the yards allowed is much more correct.
