http://www.prosportsdaily.com/comme...ep-brian-schottenheimer-with-jets-194622.html Rex Ryan works to keep Brian Schottenheimer with Jets 0 Comment January 20 New York Daily News "Newly hired Rex Ryan met Monday with Brian Schottenheimer in an apparent attempt to convince him to remain as the offensive coordinator, according to a league source. The Jets are optimistic that Schottenheimer will stay, but he's said to be disappointed that he didn't get the head-coaching job. To appease him, they may give him the authority to assemble the offensive staff. Schottenheimer is under contract for 2009, but he is drawing interest from other teams. The Jets would like to keep him, in part, because they believe it might help convince Brett Favre to return for another season. Ryan hasn't announced any hires, but he's looking to replace Eric Mangini's entire defensive staff or what's left of it. Three assistants already are gone Dan Quinn (Seahawks), Bryan Cox and Jerome Henderson. Cox and Henderson are expected to be hired by Mangini in Cleveland, sources said. Ryan's preference for defensive coordinator is Ravens linebackers coach Mike Pettine, according to a source. He is also looking to hire Dennis Thurman (secondary), formerly of the Ravens, and John Blake (defensive line), a longtime college assistant and formerly of the Cowboys. Coordinator Bob Sutton isn't likely to be retained. Longtime special teams coach Mike Westhoff will meet today with Ryan to discuss his future. Chances are, Westhoff will stay. Ryan is leaning toward keeping the offensive staff intact. Line coach Bill Callahan could become the coordinator if Schottenheimer bolts. Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson also is a strong consideration, source said."
Seems that Ryan could care less about anything to do with the offense..if he had his way they would play defense every down of the game and hope to win the game on special teams.
That's pretty much how the Ravens won 2 playoff games. I think the Jets should just build up a nasty defense this off season. At least have one dominating unit.
True. If he doesn't meddle with the offense, we will find out real quick about Schotty. To me, that will really be the big question mark. We know Rex can do a good job with the defense and Westhoff does a good job with ST's. If the 2006 version of Schotty shows up, we should have a well balanced team.
I would prefer that he did put some reigns on Schotty. He needs guidance to stick with the run game and not get away as soon as we go down one score. I think he has potential to be a very good coordinator but he needs someone to tone down the stupid 3rd and 4th and short passes and things like that.
The 'word' from down here is that the Ravens choices for Head Coach last year were 1) Jason Garret (who turned them down) 2) Harbaugh (who got the job) 3) Brian Schottenheimer and 4) Rex Ryan. If indeed Ryan is willing and even desires to keep BS on as coordinator it shows he has some confidence to keep a close rival around on his staff. If BS is around and Rexy Baby doesn't work out then Woody and Tanny have and easy move to make to promote Schottenheimer. Other rumors are that Rex will try to bring as many Ravens coaches with him as he can.
Pound the run. We should have a 55/45 runass ratio. Especially if our QB situation is as muddled as it seems it will be.
I actually like this strategy. It would help keep Rex Ryan from getting too involved in something he really doesn't know and stymieing the offense like Mangini was reported to have done. Run what you know and find people who know how to run what you don't. As TPJets said, if we get the Schotty from 06 then we should be in good shape.
We'll be taking a serious gamble keeping Shotty. The DC's of most other teams out-think him. I do not know him at all but I'm concerned this is about intelligence and there isn't much one can do to become more intelligent. That the owner and perhaps new coach have faith in him is an indicator that maybe he has the brains to win. I just can't understand how he can only put up 3 pts against Seattle in that huge game and 13 at Oakland, etc. Furthermore, once the offense gets stymied, we never seem to be able to re-compensate and start kicking ass again. This is indicative of someone being 1 step in front of you the whole way. Exactly how is this going to change?
Shotty is disapointed because he didn?t get the HC-Job? He should be happy, that he can keep his current Job. And the only option I heard of, is the Lions OC-Job. If he prefers that, we don?t need him anyway. I want a stuff, that I always have the feeling, that they do everything they can at everytime, to help this Team win games.
There's so much I don't like about this paragraph, I don't even know where to start. That last sentence is seriously difficult to believe.
That was his agent trying to scare the Jets into making him HC. His agent is the same agent as the Lions new HC. I have not heard or read about one other team showing interest in him in any way.
I don't think its the DCs of the NFL out-thinking him, I think its him out-thinking himself. His play calling has been erratic for a lot of the games, throwing too much on KC, not throwing enough on Oakland, going for it on 3rd & inches and 4th & inches with the same play-action deep ball play back-to-back against Denver. Sometimes I wonder what exactly goes on inside his head Schotty: This play would put us up against their greatest defensive strength. They'd probably have no trouble in stopping it...so they'd never see it coming!
As bland as it is to watch, the truth is you win games in the NFL on defense and special teams. Larry Fitzgeralds are few and far between, and more often than not, the big play wide receiver becomes a divisive malcontent. The Jets focus should be on establishing a dominant running game and pass rush. We have a big play weapon in Leon Washington and possibly David Clowney. The rest of the stuff amounts to frills some teams are fortunate to have. -X-
My comment wasn't made as a negative one, I could be perfectly happy watching a dominating defense play the entire game on every play.
If we fire him, he may get an offer. I think it would be in his own best interest to suck it up and stay here. Get his act together and have a good year or 2 of running a good solid offense and he will get some offers again. If he tries to bolt now it will set his HC aspirations back quite a bit. If he goes to the Lions, that could stick a fork in it.
