http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/ From Cimini's blog: February 28, 2008 Breaking down the trade rumors Now I know how the baseball writers feel, covering the hot-stove league. We?re about 15 hours from the start of free agency, give or take, and the Jets-related buzz is focusing on potential trades. Trades? In the NFL? They?re happening more often in recent years, and it looks like the Jets could have a couple of big ones in the coming days. Let?s sort through the rumors and speculation. ? There?s a rumored three-way trade between the Jets, Broncos and Lions. The Jets would send DT Dewayne Robertson to the Broncos, the Broncos would send CB Domonique Foxworth and a second-round pick to the Lions and the Lions would send DT Shaun Rogers to the Jets. As crazy as it sounds, it makes sense on a lot of levels, although the Jets should be wary of Rogers: He can be a dominating player, but there?s some ?dog? in him and he?s had some knee issues. Three-way trades are rare in the NFL, but GM Mike Tannenbaum is pretty creative with that sort of thing. Remember, he pulled off a three-way in the John Abraham-to-the-Falcons deal, which also involved the Broncos. ? As you know, the Jets also are talking to the Lions about LB Jonathan Vilma, who visited yesterday for a physical. Ordinarily, a trade is complete when a player goes for the physical, but this is different. Vilma is coming off major knee surgery and the Lions want to check out the goods before intensifying trade talks with the Jets. From what I hear, there?s a real chance this could happen. Rogers has come up in the talks. Vilma for Rogers? Very intriguing. The Jets probably would have to throw in a late-round pick to complete that deal. ? By the way, the Jets are hot for Lions G Damien Woody, an unrestricted free agent. Little-known fact: The Jets almost acquired Woody before the trading deadline last October - he would?ve replaced LG Adrien Clarke - but the Lions backed out at the 11th hour. ? Vilma and Robertson also have been linked to the Panthers in trade talks. Early yesterday, I heard the Panthers had targeted Robertson as a replacement for DT Kris Jenkins, who is being shopped, but after a few phone calls, I was told the Panthers were lukewarm on Robertson because of his contract. Now I read that the Panthers really like Vilma. Makes sense, considering they need a replacement for the recently-released Dan Morgan. ? The Saints, one of the early teams connected with Vilma, don?t appear to be as hot for him as once thought. I know for a fact they?ve done some homework on Vilma, but from talking to people, I got the impression their interest has cooled. ? On the free-agent front, I expect the Jets to be aggressive suitors for Woody, Steelers LG Alan Faneca, Raiders DE Tommy Kelly and Cards OLB Calvin Pace, as reported in today?s Daily News. ? To quote Eric Mangini, I have a little housekeeping. Here?s how the Justin McCareins/Andre Dyson/Adrien Clarke cuts broke down in terms of cap savings: They?ll save $2.6 million on McCareins, $625,000 on Dyson and approximately $500,000 on Clarke. Total: $3.75 million
I haven't heard anything about Tommy Kelly. That sounds interesting. Or Woody for that matter anyone got some info on these guys?
Someone please explain to me why WE would need to throw in a late round pick to complete the Rogers/Vilma deal? Vilma is the better talent and is younger. The Lions would need to send us a 4th and Rogers for Vilma in my opinion
Cimini is awesome. Very interesting to hear about Damien Woody last year...that really would have changed last year's team. At least in retrospective its good to hear they weren't content with Adrian Clarke.
rogers has a lil more value i think...right now vilma cant run at full speed. hes just jogging and hasnt had a good year in two years
Yeah - seriously, he's a hack. All he talked about last year was Kendall, b/c that was his boy that gave him inside juice. STFU, get over it, and start putting out pertinent articles.
If we were the team w/ Rogers we'd be seeing "WELL WE BETTER GET A PICK BACK TOO" because of Vilma's knee. I'm happy that the Jets brass are interested in actually making the team better as opposed to what they did last offseason.
It's not like Rogers is completely healthy either. Plus, the fact that Vilma is younger gives him more value than Rogers any day injury or no injury. And if his knee is so bad that we would need to give them an extra draft pick, he would fail his physical. Again, there is no reason for us to give the Lions a draft pick AND Vilma for Rogers
God, I really don't like hearing this. Woody and Rogers both have issues with weight. They both get tired easily. We need Woody to be our primary run blocker next to Brick and we need Rogers to be the center of our defense. I think picking up either of these guys is a huge step backwards.
Damien Woody would need to be our RT. Woody really excelled at RT after the Lions finally decided to bench Foster.
Let's get Rogers and Jenkins, why the hell not? (half-kidding). I'm really curious about this Damien Woody trade at the deadline. Very interesting tidbit there.
I didnt even know Woody got MOVED to RT...that's very interesting. I was under the impression that Woody was our back-up plan if Faneca fell though. If woody comes in along w/ Faneca we have alot of options.. (Sorry about my excitement but 2 years w/ Clement and last year w/ Clarke..i'm desperate for positive OL talk) Scenario 1 LT- Brick LG- Faneca C- Mangold RG- Moore RT- Woody Scenario 2 LT- Brick LG- Faneca C- Mangold RG- Woody RT- Bender and onbe of our rookie draft picks battle it out
Woody better be signed only for RG, RT, or backup duty. Please don't tell me he's their "cheap alternative" to Faneca.
