Going for it late in the 4th qtr down three from the 22. Why kick the 39 yard field goal to tie it when you can call a crafty running play on 4th and two that gets snuffed out. What was he thinking? For all the struggles we have had this year I am still glad Herm is no longer our coach.
That's complete BS. Give Herm credit FOR GOING FOR IT!!! All the guy did was get criticized for being conservative,,,, and in some cases rightfully so,,,, but now that he goes for it, it's complete BS to criticize him. Good for him.
Your kidding right??? This wasn't him settling for a long field goal this was him deciding not to tie the game. One of the worst calls I have ever seen.
It's not about being a wild man and going for it all the time, it's about making competent decisions with the football late in games. The easy decision there was to go for the tie. He's not long for KC. -X-
That's a big time call outta Herm, showing some guts. Now that's playing to win the game. Why not compliment the guy, who am I suppposed to compliment, Mangini and that awesome game plan they implemented in Dallas? Get the heck outta here.
Under certain circumstances, I think I might even agree. In this case, though, the division leader is 5-5 and the Chiefs are still in the playoff race. No question he has to tie that game before he ever gets the chance of playing to win it. At this point, it's just not a fairly debatable issue that Herm is the worst game manager coaching today. He called a timeout to decide whether to challenge a call, decided to challenge it and lost. That's a two timeout swing. Rough.
I find it amazing that anyone would think that that is anything other than an idiotic play call. I didn't think Herm was going to be fired after this year, but losing a game to your archrivals because of an absurd decision like that could certainly do it. Edit: I went over to Chiefs Planet to see what they were saying about it. Apparently more people were upset about how Herm blew 2 timeouts just before the play - one to decide what to do, and then after that apparently to make a ridiculous challenge. Looks like slippery sliding over there for old Herm.
I watched very little of this game. In fact, one of the only plays I saw live was Dave Rayner's missed field goal attempt. Didn't the 4th down play in question come with 4 something remaining on the clock? If so, I'm not sure it was an idiotic play call. The field was choppy because there was another game played on it roughly 12 hours earlier. A 39-yard FG in that spot might be tough. Maybe Edwards had visions of Doug Brien in Heinz Field dancing in his head.
Bad call by herm. Being aggressive in bad situations doesn't make you a good coach. See: Eric Mangini
The FG could have easily been missed but nobody would have blamed Herm for it. He missed an opportunity to either tie the game or throw the FG kicker under the bus. Not a smart decision.
You failed to mention the timeout he called, just to challenge a play that he would eventually lose, in turn losing another timeout... Oh how I miss our clock management when Herm was around...timeouts??? We dont need no stinkin timeouts!!
and if he settled for the FG and lost in OT you would question why he didnt' go for it. The bottom line is w/ less talent Herm has 2 mopre wins than we have, i could put up w/ Herm again considering all he did was win here when he had a healthy tea unlike what we are going through this year.
Bottom line Herm took over a 10 win team, Mangini with zero experience took over a 4 win team, Herm has 1 more win than Mangini. The Chiefs were a far better team than the Jets when Herm took over and he has had two off seasons, just like Mangini to get them better.
a 10 win non playoff team that only got their 10th win b/c they played a team in week 17 that rested their starters. That 10 win team didn't include the HOF LT, the PB FB and another starting OL PLUS he lost his starting QB for most of the year. Mangini's 4 win team was only 4-12 b/c of injuries, it was a year removed from being a kick away from the AFC Title Game meaning we won at leas one playoff game something KC hasn't done since Joe Montana and it KC had missed 2 straight years before Herm got there. Herm is not the GM, Herm works w/ the players peterson gets him and they ahve completely rebuilt. Herm has done a MUCH better job this year than Mangini, he had a team in contention that had no business being in contention for half a year while we are awful and healthy w/ a team that should be competing for a playoff spot. I still like Mangini but Herm did a better job here and continues to do a better job.
Aha....Now it's clear....:rofl2: Herm is not the GM, you are correct. However, he is the HFC. And that was atrocious mismanagement at the end of a close game...
