It is carzy to have Mark Carrier a former DB as our DL coach just because he is a buddy of Rex. We need a guy that is a teacher.

The Vikings fired Dunbar in a year that Jared Allen set the franchise record with 22 sacks.

“I'm a position coach," Dunbar told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "I'm not a coordinator. I'm not a head coach. When I look at what I did with the Minnesota Vikings, my piece of the puzzle was to make the defensive line play as well as they could.

"We played well against the run. I think we finished No. 11 against the run. And we finished No. 1 in sacks (with 50). And the guy I coached led the league in sacks with 22 on a team that really didn't have a lead the last eight games of the year. So I thought that was my piece of the puzzle. I can't worry about running backs, defensive backs, receivers, linebackers. When you do it, you focus on your job, put your piece of the puzzle in and go from there."

Completely agree. This would be a very smart move... but would the front office actually realize this?

This is only getting my hopes up. I mean the second speculation of a possible OC was the coordinator of Jacksonville. Like that makes sense.

Eh, guy coached Jared Allen, easy to look good when you're coaching that beast. Hard to know how good a coach he is without being that close to that situation. They've always had a great DL, but their DL was also 4 very good players, 3 of whom (Williams, Williams, Allen) have been great for a long time.

I have heard the "he is a db coaching lineman so he must be bad " on this board before. I just want to say that playing and coaching a position are entirely different. In the coaching profession you want guys that study and learn their craft. Having someone who never played a position become a good coach in the NCAA or NFL is not uncommon.
That said Devito puha and others har overachieved since this staff has been here. It's Tanny's job to find some pass rushers.

And don't forget Rex came up as a defensive line coach. Plus, if we are giving this Viking dude credit for Jared Allen being great, shouldn't Mark Carrier get then get credit for the development of bench players that became solid starters in Devito and Pouha?
