I think someone mentioned something similar to this earlier in another thread. Jason from http://nyjetscap.com/ also mentioned on another board that the Jets planned on using any money they saved from Faneca to start paying off Gholston. I'll try to find a link.

This doesn't need to turn into another "how will gholston perform at DE?" thread.

If he doesn't perform this season he is finally fucking gone.

Looks like the Jets are taking a different approach with Gholston next year....they're gonna make him EARN his salary.

    novel idea.

Really interesting. If he was willing to restructure his contract it shows that football is not just a payday for him and he wants to contribute.

This is a good move. I didn't think it'd be possible to restructure his deal.

I wonder how much extra weight this bum is going to put on this off-season? Hopefully he gets up to 275 to 280.

This is a great idea, make him try to reach those incentives.

That's what i got out of this too.. hopefully there are incentives about playing ability and performance and not just his presence at training camp and other optional work outs.

They will most certainly be game performance based.

NYjetscap doesn't put it exactly that way...:

"It is being estimated that on April 19, 2010 the Jets advanced Gholston future salaries of 2.445 million in a contract renegotiation"

I would be willing to restructure a bit if you give me 2.5 right away... IMO the Jets are trying to change his deal so that he has as little dead money as possible in 2011 when he'll likely get cut.

Anyways it's great to see him having to step up his game to earn some extra cash...

I think the Ghost has a decent year this year at DE compared to the null seasons he had the past 2 years. Give him a McDonalds shopping spree for a month and make him earn the salary in 2010. MAYBE he'll get 3 or 4 sacks.

    Rex's surgery wasn't a lap band. It's a tube that goes from Rex's stomach into Gholston's.

Adam Schefter also contributed to the story, which means its probably true that he agreed to a salary reduction.

Like some have mentioned this makes u think that he does want to at least be a good teammate and maybe he does care about football.

I think maybe Mangini ruined this guy a lot more than many of us may have realized, can't say I'm surprised. Hopefully rex will be the cure.

I think that's the only incentive written into the deal.

and maybe he'll work a little harder to get a payday. This just seems like a really good move by our FO. Either he'll start doing something on the field, or this new contract will help in a capped year 2011.
