I saw a blog post by George R.R. Martin and I thought I'd post it here. Apparently, when he isn't finishing the next book in his Song of Ice and Fire series, he's a Jets fan (I think I was dimly aware of this, but to see a blog post by him on the Jets was pretty cool). Victory in Black, with White OCTOBER 31, 2021 Who WERE those men in black? They couldn’t have been the New York Jets, could they? The same team that got spanked by the Falcons and humiliated by the Patriots? No way. I mean, they did things the Jets have not done all season. Scored in the first quarter. Took the lead. Got first downs. Throttled one of the highest scoring offenses in the NFL. They ran, they passed, they scored. And that quarterback who came off the bench, four years in the NFL and never started a game before… or even played, till last week. Mike White? Is that his name? I doubt that even Fireman Ed knew it till last week. But every Jets fan knows it now. He passed for 400 yards! Against a tough Bengals D. No Jets quarterback has passed for 400 yards since Vinnie Testaverde, back in the dawn of time. Chad Pennington never did it. Mark Sanchez never did it. Fitzmagic never did it, Geno never did it, Sam Darnold never did it. Mike White did it. He bounced back from a hellacious hit too. And he caught the two point conversion on a trick play. I love this guy. He was everything Zach Wilson and Sam Darnold were supposed to be, but weren’t. I know, I know. It’s Halloween. This must be some kind of trick. I will wake up tomorrow and it will be Halloween all over again, and the game will have been a dream… a nightmare for Cincy. Then I will have to watch the real game, and it will be a horror. But meanwhile… what a treat! The Jets should wear those black uniforms every week. And Zach can take his time recovering. Please. I want to see if White is real (please please please please please). Meanwhile, life is marvelous and full of joy.
It would be nice if he'd finish the bloody series, wouldn't it? I'm going to have to read them all again when/if he releases the next one. I've forgotten most of it.
I've given up. If he ever writes them I may steal a copy from Borders so I can burn it in the parking lot. Wait, is Borders still in business?
I have good memories from Borders. My mom worked there when I was a kid, I used to stay there for hours and just read books. If nobody paid attention to me for long enough, I’d “accidentally” find myself in the adult section.
Writing is not that easy. There are so many traps and cul-de-sacs in the process that it is a miracle anything ever gets finished. Isaac Asimov wrote a particular style that required very little thought ahead of the pen so to speak as long as you knew where things were eventually winding up. That style let him be extraordinarily prolific over the course of his career. George R.R. Martin has a much more intricate style that plays off many characters against each other. This makes traps and rewrites inevitable. That said the books do seem to take a long time to emerge.
That’s certainly true, but I think people are disgruntled that he keeps on completing other projects when all anyone wants is for that series to be wound up satisfactorily.
GoT may not have a satisfactory ending, much like the adaptation from HBO did not. There's a reason that the ending of the series was so contradictory to the story line and that is likely that the author had no idea where he wanted things to go. It's worth noting that I, Claudius and the War of the Roses both wound up with chaotic unsatisfactory endings. Those are two of the primary inspirations for Game of Thrones.
He is right. About everything except those uniforms. Look like bad knockoffs of bad Eagles attempts at black.
I actually really like the look of Black on White. If the Jets are going to shake off 50 years of chaotic ineptitude due to the arrival of an unheralded FQB it seems appropriate that they do so with a new look.
Disagree. We started and won with traditional uniforms. Changing colors and styles to try and look different is what bad teams do. Just leads to looking ridiculous while playing bad. “Style” over substance never works. I put style in quotes because they look like a terrible new age fad lol.
I am a green-on-white at home and white-on-green-away kind of guy myself. those god awful Thursday colours of all green were disgusting, the black uniform looks ok as do most black uniforms but it isn't the Jets colours at the end of the day.
