This is pretty surprising. http://www.ganggreennation.com/2013/9/16/4736854/robert-malone-has-been-released
It's obvious he's hurt. He's been total crap since the 85 yard punt. He had to have hurt himself on that one. Every punt since then has been short and crappy.
His punting was ranked 15 out of 32, in terms of average. But 28 out of 32 in terms of net, which could suggest that he didn't have good hang time.
Star Ledger just had an article yesterday about how Malone's punting could be a weapon for the Jets. Guess not. http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20...ne_could_become_a_subtle_weapon_for_jets.html
Why on earth is anyone surprised by this? He was injured at the end of camp and his punts have been shit, outside the 80 yarder. His hang time was miserable and he wasn't exactly great at downing it inside the 10.
Westhoff on espn radio pregame show a few weeks ago said he would pick Quigley, because he was a better directional punter, better at downing the ball inside the 20
This is just more of the ongoing competition philosophy from Idzik. I like it. A player needs to continually play at a high level otherwise the team moves on. In a game as close as it was Thursday, net punt yardage and field position become more important. Malone did a terrible job and it cost him his spot on the roster. This is also why Geno hasn't been given the permamnent starteing QB job and we are starting to hear noise about Simms. Either you get the job done or we will find someone who can.
Hangtime on his punts were atrocious so far this season I like this move. Sent from my HTCEVODesign4G using Tapatalk 2
I so agree, If you are not playing to the highest level your gone, No favorites on this team now. Play well or see you later.. Love this GM. Now we need a Vet WR and someone who can try to return a punt.
