Free Agent Profile - SS Keanu Neal Marcus Maye and Keanu Neal both played and dominated at the UF Should the New York Jets sign this hard hitting Safety? If you enjoy the video, please like and subscribe ✈️
The easiest way to tell if a free agent signing is going to work out in the long run is to look at the deal and ask yourself if the Jets got a bargain or the player got his dream deal. If the Jets got a bargain the odds are pretty good the deal will be break even at worst. If the player got his dream deal the opposite is true: the deal is likely to be break even at best. When a player fills a need at a reasonable price the odds are pretty good that his contributions are sustainable over the long-term. When he just made major bank the odds are that the Jets will regret the deal in a year or two at the outside and at best will be looking to renegotiate his contract most years to try to make it work on the cap. There are no teams in the NFL currently who have made high-priced free agents a consistent part of a winning plan. There are however a few teams who have looked like idiots over the years trying to integrate expensive merc's into the plan. We're one of those teams.
Depends on the contract, but he could be a good fit with Maye as the physical safety. Could probably use the money in more effective area though, safeties don't move the bar much. Yes. It would be a colossal mistake if the Jets consider Ashtyn Davis locked in as the SS and not bring in, at minimum, competition. He did not perform well enough last year to be given that spot.
Thanks JackB I rather spend money on more impact positions like OL, Edge Rusher, CB etc. I think we can make do in the Safety Department considering our new HC loves to bring pressure up front and making it easier to get away with not so stellar Safeties.
We don't need the premier FA safety, but we need either one that has starting potential or draft another one IMO.
I don’t think it’s a need as much as it is a want. I like the idea of Ashtyn getting a chance to play as the 3rd nickel this year prior to taking over a starting role in 2022. Like someone else mentioned, Davis needs some developing and certainly didn’t prove enough to be handed the starting job outright this year. Certainly not as big of a need as QB, CB, EDGE, G, TE, etc.
I'd roll the dice with Davis next year and maybe a minimal older veteran signing (Jahleel Addae, Tavon Wilson). We're gonna have to start developing and letting these draft picks play unless Douglas feels he's just looked like too much of a mess in practice and what not. I try not to put too much stock in how a young guy like him looked in a blitz heavy scheme where they moved Maye around like he was Adams. Safety becomes a bigger 'need' if Maye and his agent causes problems with not wanting to play under the tag. If we start loading up on free agents all over the place then we're just going to end up hanging these young guys down the ladder and they'll have no chance to ever develop without play time.
Agreed. Vet min guy would work. Just need at least 1 more body. I just really didn't like what i saw from Davis last year... hope im wrong.
I agree. There will be cheaper Safeties in FA than Neal. I think a LB who excels in coverage is a bigger need than SS.
Would be curious if Davis could play and do similar to what Chauncey Gardner Johnson does with the Saints...
