Interesting article.... http://www.forbes.com/lists/2009/30/football-values-09_New-York-Jets_304841.html Lets get that salary cap removed!
Not having a salary cap pretty much ruined soccer in Europe. I still love soccer but it really sucks that it are always the same teams who play for the titles. One of the things which are great about the NFL is the fact that all teams even the sucky ones like the raiders have a chanche to be on top in a few years.
But being a Jet fan I'm selfish and I don' care about the other teams. Our biggest advantage can't be utilized, ala Yankees/Mets. We have a larger market and therefore deserve more money put into the team, I don't see anything wrong with that. The Max Kellerman theory.
What if Johnson dumps everybody when there is no cap? Once he sells all of the PSLs he can go to a 20 million dollar payroll and put the rest in his pocket. What does he have to lose? You only see the people that you do now because of PSLs. People forget what a cheap SOB he was before he had to sell PSLs.
"But being a Jet fan I'm selfish and I don' care about the other teams." Always winning games becomes boring pretty soon. The best soccer team from Holland is Ajax and they are from Amsterdam so naturally i'm a fan of the team but i almost never attend their games in the dutch competition cause they win like 80-90% of their games. There is no excitement if you always win. Winning is only nice if you have to be nervous before the game. And that's why the NFL is so great. Every team can beat every team. Ofcourse it would be great if the Jets win more but personally i don't think it's a good idea to reach that goal by making the NFL a dull competition.
Not for me, I have suffered for over 20 years now. I just wan't a championship. Then I will start to feel bad the Lions and other teams of the sort.
I live in the heart of Texas and I can tell you, I haven't met a single Cowboys fan that feels even the slightest bit badly that they had a dynasty in a playing field that was far from level without a salary cap. I honestly wouldn't care.
I want the salary cap to stay. I love football because of the parity, it makes it exciting for smaller markets and gives more competition to the sport overall. That, I think, is why football is easily my favorite sport.
I'm a Yankees fan and Jets fan. As a Yankees fan, I never grow tired of beating up on the teams who don't spend ridiculous sums of money like the Yankees do. As a Jets fan, I hate getting beat by the Raiders. I'll take the "boredom" that comes with winning any day. BTW: I definitely subscribe to the Kellerman school of thought on the salary cap subject. It's not my fault people choose to live in Kansas City or Cincinatti.
The cowboys won in 93,94 and 96. The first year of the cap was '94 so I would assume in there. I'm not sure what kind of cap it even was back then.
In the early 90s, when there was no salary cap. Or are you trying to be literal? The Cowboys were the main reason there IS a salary cap.
I know when they won but Dallas had nothing to do w/ the NFL getting a salayr cap. Their wasn't free agency back then. They had plan B in '91 and '92 before full FA in 1993 the first year of the cap. They got the cap once they allowed FA. Dallas wasn't winning b/c of any payroll advantage.
The Cowboys built that juggernaut of a team during the non-capped period, no realistic free agency to stifle their efforts to retain all of their key players, and they were able to restructure deals to front-load them and keep most of those players for their recognized dynasty period. The true effects of the cap and the current FA system did not really start affecting the league until about 1995.
How was the playing field not level? I agree they were able to keep players they may have lost sooner but everyone was playing by the same rules and they didn't have true FA. it's not like comparing the Yankees and the Royals in MLB.
