    Source: http://theredzone.org/Blog-Description/EntryId/76872/New-Jets-GM-cites--urgency--to-win-with-Darnold

Newly hired New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas, introduced Tuesday at a news conference, said there's "a sense of urgency" to win because they have a promising young quarterback on his rookie contract, Rich Cimini of ESPN New York reports.

"He's an exciting piece," Douglas said of Sam Darnold.

Douglas said he came from a similar situation with the Philadelphia Eagles, who felt the same urgency because of Carson Wentz.

Douglas said he took the job with the Jets in large part because of his relationship with Adam Gase. Gase called him an "unbelievable" talent evaluator. Douglas, 42, was hired last Friday after a 23-day search for Mike Maccagnan's replacement. He spent the past three seasons as the Eagles' vice president of player personnel, serving as Howie Roseman's right-hand man in their 2017 Super Bowl championship season.

Previously, Douglas worked for the Baltimore Ravens (2000-2014) in scouting roles and the Chicago Bears (2015) as the director of college scouting. It was in Chicago where he met Gase, sparking a friendship that helped him land the Jets job.

Though he may not admit it publicly, Gase's top choice was Douglas, sources said. He wasn't comfortable with Maccagnan during their four months together, leading to the GM's surprising ouster after the draft.

Gase and Douglas are on the same level in the organizational power structure, both reporting directly to CEO Christopher Johnson. The Jets have used this setup since 2015, with the general manager controlling the 53-man roster and having final say on the draft and free agency.

You know, a lot more teams are like this than you realize.

This is not an unprecedented setup. Doesn't Pittsburgh do this? (and won Super Bowls)

What a stupid thread....first of all, we already knew this and secondly its not uncommon and thirdly, it will have no bearing on whether we win games or not

I continue to struggle w why certain fans have so much issue w this. Its one thing if the Jets were out on an island w this structure..buts its utilized by a significant number of teams league wide.

And what the hell is wrong w a collaborative process in the ultimate team sport?! This all came into motion w toxic GM/coach relationships like Schottenheimer/AJ Smith that tore franchises apart.

It's more important that the HC and GM share a vision on how to build the team than the reporting structure. It was clear that Gase and Macc weren't on the same page.

The setup doesn't matter if the Owner sticks his nose into operations. He signs the checks. Douglas did one thing right, he got a contract that gives him the ability to tell the owner or his kids to F off.

You dont think out of 31 other teams all are more competent than the Jets? Our teams not as dysfunctional as a lot of other franchises after I did a little research.

I've heard people say on here that the Jets are ridiculous for not doing the "normal" thing, and others say that plenty of other teams use the same approach. Has anyone actually looked at that? How each team proceeds in terms of the HC/GM/owner power structure, and how successful those teams have been?

For fuck's sake, will fans ever stop being so reactionary to every single thing? This is nothing new. The Jets finally seem to be heading in the right direction, let's give it a chance and see how it goes.

Who do you think runs the show in NE? You think BB answers to the GM or Kraft?

BB wanted to keep Garapolo. Kraft forced his hand. Everyone answers to the guy who signs the checks.

The Pats don't have a GM, Belichick runs the front office.

I know that. I'm illustrating that not all successful teams have this perceived winning power structure.
