Thursday, March 30, 2006 Jets moving facilities, training to Florham Park The New York Jets will build their new headquarters and training facility on 20 acres at the former Exxon plant in Florham Park, Mayor Frank Tinari confirmed this afternoon. "On behalf of the citizens of our fine borough I am gratified and excited that Florham Park will become the future home of the New Jets Training Facility,'' Tinari said. "After an exhaustive search process, our community was selected by the Jets and the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority. They will not be disappointed by their decision." George Zoffinger, chief executive of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, said team officials had told him Florham Park was their first choice for a training site. Tinari said a press conference is scheduled with Gov. Jon Corzine and other state officials as soon as tomorrow to discuss plans for the new $1 billion open-air stadium the Jets and Giants will build in the Meadowlands. A formal annoucement about the Florham Park deal is expected at that time, he said. The state promised to acquire land for a Jets practice facility as part of a deal between the Jets, Giants and the sports authority to build the new stadium. The Jets looked at dozens of sites and recently narrowed their choices to property in Wood-Ridge, Jersey City, Short Hills and Cedar Grove as well as the 485-acre former Exxon site Florham Park site. Team officials have said their top priorities were getting a facility that would be close to the Meadowlands and Newark, and be near a variety of housing for their staff - from $1,500 per month rental apartments to $5 million mansions. The state expects to pay $10 million to $20 million to acquire the site, but has justified the expense because the state will now be able to collect income taxes from all Jets players and employees, which will add a projected $15 million a year to the state?s coffers. The Jets now train and maintain facilities at Hofstra University on Long Island. Contributed by Matt Futterman and Lisa Vernon-Sparks Breaking news from the Star Ledger
The old Exxon site is right off of Route 24 in NJ, which is near Short Hills Mall. Very Accessible from RT 287, 80, 78, GSP. Right outside Morristown basically.
Florham Park is right off exit 48 on Route 80. It's a nice town, which is good for the players, as the communities nearby are nice for them to live in. Florham Park is near where Rt 80 meets Rt 280 and Rt 46.
now they are really the NJ Jets. Once they make the move, all ties to NY are gone. It is a shame. i remember Woody saying he wanted to bring the Jets home to NY. little did we know he meant NY,NY and no where else. I am sure you guys have debated that ad nausem, so I will stop here.
5 of the Top 100 or better! I used to go there a lot on business...a lot of traffic to get there and back to NY.
All hail the New Jersey Jets. What if the new Giants Stadium drops through and they go back to Queens?
NYJ spokesman Jay(I know nothing about football) Cross has said that Queens was never an option. So much for coming back "home" to play.
2 New York Football teams completely centered and based in New Jersey while collecting all the revenue from the New York market is a top 5 scam in this country.
WOOOO WOOOOO! This is awesome, a stones throw from my house. I'll be sure to write some training camp reports for you guys.
YAHOOOOOOOOO. They're movin to my town! It's good for them and visitors. The wives can shop nearby at the Mall at Short Hills or along Route 10 in East Hanover. There are great golf courses and restaurants. Plenty of hotels for different budgets, and access to all major highways. And they don't pay sales tax on clothing
I do, but the Jets should change their name. They owe it to themselves. True, the politicians didn't give it the best they had, and essentially kicked out the Jets, but the Jets have no relationship to NY any longer after this.
This quote leads me to believe that they have ironed out all of their differences with East Rutherford and Corzine. It seems like all systems go at this point....
