My buddy and I have often discussed how NCAA division 1 football could improve and make everyone happy. Most people think a playoff would be the answer and while I think that is possible, I don't want to enter that into the discussion as of now because it doesn't really add anything that isn't already known.

Basically, the first thing we decided needed to be fixed was to equalize the divisions. That is, make sure the 6 BCS conferences all have 12 teams, 2 divisions and a conference championship or some variation thereof in which the Big 12, Big 10, Pac 10, Big East, SEC and ACC have equal ways to measure their performance.

So what I want to know is whether people think a 12 team, 2 division conference with a championship game is the best format for a conference. If so, how would you reallign the conferences so each one had 12 teams?

For example, I would put Notre Dame in the Big 10 and Boise State and Utah in the Pac 10. The hard one is the Big East due to their basketball teams. They also don't have any obvious teams to use. They could take Notre Dame due to their basketball ties but ignoring that, they could raid either Conference USA or the MAC (or both) and get 4 teams such as Marshall, Central Florida, Bowling Green, and Ohio.

What teams would you put in the Big 10, Big East and Pac 10?

(P.S. I am one of the biggest supporters of the "little guys" and always root for them and would later on put in a system that allowed them to crash the dance if they are deemed worthy and these conference realignments would potentially trickle down to create more conferences worthy of a bid.)

Good Call. Who else would you put in? Boise?

No doubt, Boise goes into the Pac 10, and Notre Dame into the Big Ten.

How about this for the Big East: Army, Navy, Marshall, and Akron?

Screw forcing teams into conferences. The system just needs to be the top 16 teams in a tourney. 6 conference champs and 10 at-larges or 8 teams with 6 conf champs and 2 at-larges. Seeding would be done in the same style that the NCAA B-Ball tourney is done.

Sixteen teams is way too much. In my mind, you don't deserve a shot at the national title if you lost any more than two games. Eight I could see, six I could see easily; 10 is a stretch, but I'd allow it. 16 is just including teams that don't belong in the discussion.

That's true until one of those teams in the 10-16 range runs the table.
Who knows, there obviously isn't a great solution.

who cares if one runs the table. In NCAA basketball ESPN cries about 3-5 teams that shouldnt be in it and 3-5 that should

there will always be an arguement either way about At Large bids

I say keep the confrences the way they are(they might make changes) and have an 8 teams playoff with BCS ranking system
    BigE, Loiusville (5 seed)
    ACC, Wake (8)
    SEC, Florida (2)
    Big10, OSU (1)
    Big12, OU (7)
    Pac10 USC (4)
    with 3 ATLarges .
if you are a small college that has no losses you are in(Boise would be in (6)
if you are in a big conference and have one loss you are in(unless that loss was in the conference tourney that is like a WC division) Mich in (3)

0 0 loss teams got screwed
1 1 loss team got screwed Wisky(well they lost to Mich so game over)

The NCAA would never force teams to join conferences...

Thanks for the hot tip. This is purely hypothetical.
