Favre follows through on plan, requests reinstatement from NFL

The unofficial unretirement of Brett Favre moved closer to becomming official on Tuesday.

Favre faxed his official request for reinstatement, which was received by the league office, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter. By submitting his request for reinstatement, Favre followed through on his previous statements that he wants to come back from his brief retirement return to the field this season.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will not act on Favre's request on Tuesday, according to Schefter.

Once his reinstatement is approved by the league, which is expected, the Packers have 24 hours to either release Favre or bring him back on the active roster.

With Favre sending in his papers there are now only 4 ways this will end.

1. Favre goes to the Packers and they don't move him:
This is the absolute worse situation, not for the Pack or Favre, but for the NFL all together. Any other situation there are winners and losers, in this one- everyone loses. Assuming Pack stick to their words Brett sit on the bench and doesn't play. Yes he gets paid, but he doesn't care about getting paid he wants to do the only the he knows how, wear jeans and play football. The Packers will lose on multiple fronts with divisions so big not even TO could cause them. The locker room will be divided. Maybe not in the media (Packers tend to keep things well in the locker room) but you can bet players, especially the older ones with less time left, will have a big issue about having their star, HOF, QB that led them to the doorstep of the SB last year riding the pine. The fans will be greatly divided as well. Imagine if all of the sudden Colts bench Manning to see is Sorgi is the future. Granted, some will claim "not the same situation, Favre retired by choice", but many fans won't care. The facts will be, he is here, he's in camp, he can/wants to play. The rest will be in the past. Some fans can forget the past and focus on what's now and what they can do now, some won't let go of the past or stop looking "towards the future". The Packers front office will get slamed, not only for benching their "better player" but for sitting out 12 million dollars. Forget the fact that is Favre- just looking at this as "a business" it is fiscally irresponsible to throw away that kind of cash. That's like the Eagles paying TO big money with no intent on playing him just so they can "keep him away from the Cowboys".
This will all escalate exponentially with every lost the Packers get- even more so if it's due to Rodgers poor play. And let's be serious, first game against Vikes, with out Favre? Doesn't look good. And every poor play/lost after that will blow this up even more. And all in front of the Media and ESPN to all our "delight", this will blow for the NFL. And if you thought the Pats chasing perfection got media......

2. Packers Trade Brett Favre:
This is more "damage control" than an actual solution. The Packers and the NFL (and all of us that watch ESPN) will avoid the choas written above. Very important. Favre will get to play- granted maybe not for his ideal team, as it has been "suppose" (the Vikes), but he will play. And he'll put all that behind him quickly and get to doing what he wants to do and that's toss the pig skin.

WHO he gets traded to is not the issue, as long as he, the Packers, and the team do the deal- it will save all of us a lot of grief. Granted, at this point is looks like the Bucs or Jets, and the Jets look out of it.

3. Packers release Brett Favre:
This is ultimately what Favre wants and he hopes the "chaos" in the first situation will make this happen.
This is ultimately what the Packers do not want.
This will mean that Favre could, and likely will, end up in the NFC North. Likely Vikings, possibly Bears (who have been forgotten in all this since they didn't "tamper"). This is what the Packers cannot have. Such a move will add so much to a rival- likely costing them the division. The fact that they did it would be Ruth-to-Yankees like.... "Favre curse" to follow.

4. Favre retires:
This is essentially sitation 1 with a different ending. This is ultimately EXACTLY how the Packers want this to end. End thier circus, let them move on, and keep him away from other teams. Unfortunately the only one that makes this call is Favre. We can all speculate if he's "bluffing" or going to "stick to his guns", truth is none of us know. Heck, I bet you Favre doesn't know (there's a shocker). IMO, Favre isn't bluffing and he'll play hard ball, all while talking to the media and saying all the right things. He's "trying to save the team from themselves", "he just wants to play", "he'll be here when the Packers want to turn to him for win and will have no hard feelings". It won't be TO /Chad Johnson like, it won't be self centered. With the right words he'll keep all his supporters, in the locker room and in the fan base. However, if he gets fed up like many hope, and he retires all this will be put to rest and Packers sleep happy (and all keep their jobs).

1- We all lose- well maybe not ESPN
2- We all kind-sorta-win
3- Favre wins, Packers lose
4- Packers win, Favre lose, ESPN lose, fan don't have to hear anymore of this- win.
