Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was arrested Monday in Mobile, Ala., and charged with possession of codeine syrup -- a controlled substance -- without a prescription, police said.

Mobile County Sheriff's spokeswoman Lori Myles said Russell, 24, was arrested Monday afternoon at his home during an undercover investigation. Russell graduated from high school in Mobile.

Online records show that Russell was booked into the Mobile jail and released on $2,500 bond. The Mobile Press-Register reported that Russell is scheduled for a bond hearing Wednesday and a court hearing July 20.

Russell and his agent didn't immediately return calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Monday's arrest is the latest setback for Russell following his May 6 release from the Raiders. Russell spent three lackluster seasons in Oakland after the team made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft. He won just seven of his 25 starts and was eventually benched.

After releasing Russell, the Raiders filed a grievance seeking to recoup approximately $9.5 million of the $36.4 million that they paid the quarterback since 2007.

Russell has since been linked to the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets, the latter having expressed cursory interest in the former LSU quarterback.

Russell's Canadian Football League rights are owned by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, according to NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi.

I assume the Jets will now stop showing interest in him

Something sounds fishy. How come these players keep getting caught? I know so many people that have done worst things than this and have never been arrested in their life. Someone Explain?

It's simply because they're famous. The media would report an NFL player getting a jay-walking ticket or a signalling ticket.

It also doesn't help that Jam Russell is stupid as fuck. He was probably walking down the street past the cop shop drinking the codeine prompting them to bust his ass at home.

Also they're not career criminals, so getting caught doesn't break them as easily as it would if they weren't pro football players.

This thread ain't gonna be pretty. Just read his agent thought he's be a good fit with the Jets. Does his agent think the Jets are a halfway house?

Not thanks to Fatsass and his silly agent.
