NFL Network on SiriusXM said it was a thirty million dollar bump from 2021. They also said cap minimum will not be determined for a while due to negotiations with the union.
It’s a ceiling, which doesn’t necessarily mean it will get that high, but the fact that they installed it means there’s a good chance: A couple of points: 1: The Cap is based on a percent of the overall NFL revenue from the previous year, so 2021 Cap = a percentage of 2020 revenue. 2: The true cap for 2021 would have been somewhere around $150 million per team, but they artificially raised it to $182.5 to avoid mass cuts of veteran players. 3: That ~$30 million per team was essentially NFL owner revenue, which still has to be paid back over time. 4: The NFLPA also gave up some player benefits in 2020 to help the 2021 Cap, which I believe also need to be paid back. 5: As the NFL sees the other sports leagues with successful fan attendance, they are prepping for a financially successful season. In an attempt to recover the earnings they “loaned” to the players, they set the Cap ceiling, so that any surplus revenue acts as repayment to the owners. 6: The 2022 Cap will be based off of 2021 earnings, so none of this effects the cap this year.
