Just saw this posted by profootballfocus.. Really highlights just how bad he is in coverage and what a weakness that is for our defense: ProFootbalFocus ProFootballFocus.com That 73-yard reception from Welker moves Eric Smith to the bottom of yardage given up by a safety - 295 on 13 catches - 22.7 per catch
We all know he isnt very good in coverage. I do not think this is a revelation or anything. That Welker 73 yarder was on both Revis and Smith. That was poor communication. I know we are want to give Revis the benefit of the doubt but fair is fair if it is a communication problem, we should blame both. I am more concerned with him not playing to his strengths this year. He has not really gotten in his big hits so far and he isn't helping in the run game either..........
i say that starting wilson and revis at corner and moving cromarte to safety to replace smith is a better move. pool could play strong safety with cro as free safety.
The idea isn't bad, but will Cromartie be any better than Kerry Rhodes Also, are they likely to do it mid-season? Is it a better idea to move smith to OLB?
The "SS" has pretty much been run out of the game since the spread offense became huge in the NFL the past couple of years. Safeties should be definite cover guys now, if they can help in the run game, that's gravy. Not sure how Cro would do at Safety. Safety is more Xs and Os than man coverage at CB.
Lombardi was talking about that on last week's Rich Eisen show, saying he can see the day coming when teams put out four cornerbacks rather than using safeties.
Are you guys aware that ProfootballFocus is a sight run out of England by some accountants and statisticians, turned football stat geeks, trying to be the Bill James of the NFL They breakdown games using network feeds and use "volunteers" to make subjective decisions on whether a player succeeded or failed. They also make those "evaluations" without any knowledge of what the defenses called are, who had what responsibility, and what player actually screwed up. And as we all know the network feed often doesn't show you all 22 players On the play in question it could have very easily been Revis who should have been taking the deep outside and Smith who was responsible for the TE. OR it could have been the other way around. the point is I don't know. You don't know, and THEY don't know. There are 2 points here. One being that unless Rex decides to break down the play and the reasons why the D broke down (and don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen). the "analysis" you get from PFF is simply a rank amateur's uniformed OPINION Secondly take with a grain of salt any stats you get from that site and anyone's analysis who bases their hypothesis on information quoted by PFF As to Eric Smith, I have no opinion, the Pats have their own problems right now at S BTW- Jake, you are right on the money about SS. But SS won't fade away, they'll just morph into "coverage LB's"
That's interesting, thanks for that information. But in this case however, it does have some merit although it doesn't take a math genius to figure it out, only two eyes and half a brain.. That is just seeing smith play over the years. he's absolutely awful in coverage and has always been a liability. there's games when he's not terrible but usually when you see people getting burned, its him
shit with REVIS....it should change how your safeties play... im convinced SMITH/LEOHNARD both suck.....they play 30 yds off the ball....REVIS should allow your safties be much more aggressive and play less traditional
Leonard sucks? did you bother watching any of the games last after he broke his leg and see how lost our secondary was? he's not a star, but he's essential to our defense. he just needs a rangy play making type safety next to him
Anyone see Eric Smith on Jets game plan today?Didnt know the guy was accepted to Harvard and Yale,He also may be a better fisherman than he is a safety!
Cro at safety would be disaster. He's a pussy and hates contact. A safety is there to help mop up a mess should something go wrong in the 2nd level.
