08/13 ? Brett Favre did not have a particularly strong practice Wednesday morning and he admitted as much afterwards.

?My arm?s kind of dragging today," the quarterback said. "It?s not really sore, but to be honest with you I?m surprised that I almost half feel good because I?ve been able to make it through every practice so far. I think maybe this afternoon I?ll talk to Eric about it, limit my throws a little bit. I didn?t throw the ball very well today ? no pain, but I?m 38 years old.?

However, Favre, no stranger to heroics over his illustrious career, ended his workout with a fantastic finish. Operating in the two-minute offense, it appeared he and his offensive cohorts were going nowhere. Trailing by a field goal, 20-17, they faced a fourth-and-10 and their 47-yard line with little time on the clock.

The offense put itself in that predicament, calling a timeout and then being charged with a delay of game infraction immediately following the break of action.

And yet Favre somehow found a way to make six points out of nothing, hitting WR Brad Smith for a 53-yard TD. All three wideouts ran go routes, and it was Smith who got loose from CB Darrelle Revis for the score.

Faced with the late-game situation, the second-team offense, directed by QB Kellen Clemens, got to the plus-35. Mike Nugent came on to drill a 53-yarder as Favre?s fifth practice as a Jet reached a conclusion.

As Favre got to work in team action, he struggled immediately. The ball didn?t come out right on a long wobbler to Laveranues Coles and LC couldn?t come up with a circus catch. Two plays later, Favre had Jerricho Cotchery open down the seam (and a lot of grass in front of him), but he just led him too far. Then Favre and C Nick Mangold shared a second penalty lap this week after they weren?t clean with a snap exchange.

?We missed on a couple of big plays today,? he said. ?We can?t afford to do that during the season, so I hope we?re getting those out of our system now. But those were my fault ? I overthrew one and underthrew another one. But I think a week from now that?s where we?ll be much better.?

The beneficiary of Favre?s underthrow was S Abram Elam. The gunner went play-action and dialed long distance for Coles. The ball was well short, though, and Elam, who started eight games a year ago, came up with a nice takeaway.

?I was just trying to read my keys and do what I?m coached to do," Elam said. "I got out early, got good depth and was able to play the ball at its highest point. It?s good going against a guy like Brett because he makes you be conscious of where you are and play the whole down because he can make all the throws.?

In just three days, Favre will see his first preseason action with the Jets when he starts against the Washington Redskins.

?Believe me, the system is not easy. I?m not going to sit here and tell you I've got it down,? Favre said. ?I?ve got just about enough plays down to run those plays Saturday. How it turns out, I have no idea. I hope it turns out well.?

    More Practice Notes

We?ll have more in a news story from Favre's news conference later. As far as the rest of happenings at practice, DE Shaun Ellis (Mike DeVito has received valuable reps with the ones) and OLB Jason Trusnik worked out under the direction of strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi.

But Jesse Chatman, who had been wearing a red jersey at practice, was obviously cleared for contact and participated in team drills. WR Marcus Henry also made it through the opening half of today?s doubleheader.

The Jets are also definitely game-planning a little bit for their second preseason contest. The defensive scout team featured rookie Kenwin Cummings with a No. 59 (London Fletcher), Marques Murrell with a 55 (Jason Taylor) and one of the young DBs had a No. 30 (S LaRon Landry).

On the offensive side, Musa Smith played the part of Clinton Portis, Paul Raymond saw time as Santana Moss and Jason Pociask showed up as Pro Bowl TE Chris Cooley.

Since there is no tackling out here, it?s pretty difficult to assess the running game?s progress. But from what I saw today, both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington rolled their ways through a couple of big holes ? on both sides of the line.

This morning's practice ran 2 hours, 13 minutes, the longest practice of training camp.

I was beginning to wonder how Favre's arm was holding out... 5 practices since Saturday. I'd be throwing a little off too.

This I dont like seeing. At least from the defensive standpoint
