Ed Asner, the iconic Lou Grant, has passed away at the age of 91. The character was very unusual. in that it started out as a comedic role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and then became a dramatic one on Lou Grant. More amazingly, he was great at both, winning three Emmys for Best Supporting Actor on MTM and two for Best Actor on Lou Grant. He also won Emmys for roles on Rich Man, Poor Man and Roots. He and Charlton Heston had epic political battles that you can look up if you're interested. After Gavin McLeod's passing three months ago, only Betty White is left from the cast of MTM. RIP, Mr. Grant (as Mary would say). https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/ed-asner-dead-lou-grant-1235051373/
Ed Asner was one of those actors that gave you a lot more than you were expecting when you first saw him. Like Carroll O'Connor he had the build and persona to play just about anything you wanted him to. J.K. Simmons is the guy in this generation that fits that mold. RIP Lou Grant.
