Excellent players at positions of need: Jarvis Jones - OLB (jr) Manti Te'o - ILB Chance Warmack - G Jake Matthews - RT (jr) Jonathan Cooper - G C.J. Mosley - ILB (OLB) - (jr) Jones and Te'o are out of reach as likely top 8 picks. Warmack and Cooper are both guards and although highly rated probably not worth a top 14 pick or so, they'd be trade down material. Matthews and Mosley are likely to be among the best players left on the board at about the 14 or so where the Jets are likely to be picking. They're both juniors and might not declare. QB's that might be worth a 2nd round pick: Landry Jones Aaron Murray That's kind of the list at this point. Jones has a rep for shaky play on the big stage in a framework of absolutely dominant gunslinging. Murray may not declare for the draft if he thinks mid-2nd is the best shot he'll get this time around. QB's taken in the mid-second tend to die on the vine at the NFL level with vanishingly few getting a real shot at a starting job. RB's: Giovanni Bernard - 2nd round Joseph Randle - 2nd/3rd round Both guys are two-way players who excel as outlet receivers and are used that way. Both of them have a nose for the endzone. Bernard is a redshirt sophomore and may well not declare hoping to get up into the first round next year with another strong performance. He's a golden pick if he's out there because he doesn't have much wear and tear at this point and he has huge growth potential, like Marshall Faulk/Ray Rice potential. If Bernard does declare a strong combine performance could vault him into the first round. Does not have blazing speed so it will take a great all-around performance to move him up that much. I would not take him in the first round but he'd be money in the bank in the 40's. TE's: Zach Ertz - 2nd round Dion Sims - 2nd/3rd round Ertz is a pass-catcher and down-field threat. Sims is a huge (280+ lbs) blocker who also functions as an outlet over the middle. He's another of the converted basketball players playing TE. Both would be good fits for the Jets at this point. You could make an argument for taking Ertz in the 2nd and then Sims in the 3rd. Two TE's and a back can be either a spread or ground and pound and you don't have to decide which until you get up to the line of scrimmage. Safeties: Eric Reid - 1st/2nd round T.J McDonald - 2nd round Reid comes from DB Central in LSU and is upholding the tradition well, being named to the Coaches All-American team in his junior year. He's got excellent physical tools and is a very aggressive player. McDonald is a strong defender against the run and also a good pass defender. That's a very early look at names we'll be hearing a lot about in Jets draft talk as the second season approaches.
I really dislike Jones and I dont think Aaron Murray has that high of a ceiling in the NFL. Once again, I would prefer Mike Glennon or even Zac Dysert. Manti Te'O is the only MLB we should consider. Mosley obviously isnt on that level, although a very good player, but when we have such huge needs at other positions I dont see how we could even consider him. I would 100% rather Chance Warmack, an absolute monster and future probowler. Jawan Jamison and Anthony Barr are two players we should keep an eye on if they declare- Barr could be the best pass rusher in the class.
Hell no to Landry Jones. Murry is a player. Unlike Lax I'm not a huge Glennon fan. He seems to be moving up in the scouting comunity, I'm just not sold on his accuracy. The Ball really jumps out of his hand though. McDonald has taken a step back this year. Not a huge fan at all. If we are talking 1st/Second round Saftey Kenny Vaccaro is the guy. good size for the position and very good cover skills. Rambo should also be in the conversation. We are not taking a TE early if Keller is back or not. Too many otehr holes to fill right now. Simms may last due to his injury history. If the kid could stay on the feild he'd be a second, but he keeps missing time. If the current coaching staff stays Mosley is exactly the type of OLB we would not draft. Too short and too light for what Rex wants. Your Missing a lot of OLB's by not inclusing the DE's that can stand up. Rex leans to guys with long arms and Bulk in the fron 7. Any De in the 6-4 + and 250 to 270 range that is fulid enough to play in space will get a long look from the staff. Werner and Ansah are going to be possible first round otions as well. Jarvis Jones is still a scary pick due to his spine condition. I keep finding cinflicting reports on if it will shorten his career or not. His Medical red flag will be looked at by all in the combine. Warmack and Matthews would be my favorite first round picks, but I think we are going defenses again.
I've been leaning away from Jones as of late, with his spinal issue I see him as a short term player. Manti Te'o Bjoern Werner Damontre Moore Chance Warmack Jake Matthews are the only guys I would take in the 1st as of now.
I agree with you 100% on the OLB thing... Werner and Moore have to be a big part of that discussion and even someone like Dion Jordan has to be considered. I like Rambo as a midround prospect at safety, but our offense is so horrific that I struggle trying to fit him (or any other safety) in a draft unless we lose Landry. As for the QB's I do understand your questions with Glennon and his accuracy... His completion % isnt very good, but after watching a decent amount of games of his its pretty evident that the talent around him is pretty bad. Dropped pass after dropped pass... If he was on a team like, say USC, he would probably be the unquestioned top rated QB and a potential #1 pick. Just after watching Sanchez for 4 years, I want a QB who can sling it and make every single throw that a NFL QB has to make. Some of his throws just make you say wow. He is a statue in the pocket and can mechanically breakdown a little bit under pressure, but I think that can be fixed with coaching. I love his upside and thats why I would love him on this team, but only if we have a new front office and coaching staff. I've honestly lost faith in this regime's ability to raise a QB and thats the most important thing in the NFL today. If you cant do that, you might as well throw in the towel. You let a guy like Glennon sit for a year and develop under a quality CS and I would have faith in him. Who knows what happens with this position though... we are f*cked if Tanny is here next year trying to figure out that problem. All of those players may be long gone if we keep winning meaningless games... You are going to have to broaden your hopes, because otherwise you may be setting yourself up for a letdown.
Lax, as for Glennon this was the game that really had me thinking. He Misses a few guys high and its one of the things I hate about Mark, Missing high over the middle is almost always a pick. He does makes some very good throws as well. For Reference he Dominates against UNC though.
