1. Manti Te'o (Notre Dame, LB) - as of right now, this is my favorite player in the draft and the way we have been playing I think we will get a top 10 pick. reminds me a lot of Brian Urlacher, will be a beast in the NFL and we would be stupid to pass on him. 2. Robert Woods (USC, WR) - Woods has had an ankle injury this year, so I think he falls early second. I would like the Jets to rid themselves of Holmes and go with a young receiving corps for Sanchez to work with, but with Tone's injury he isn't going anywhere. Woods would be a great addition to our offense. 3. Sean Porter (Texas A&M, LB) - we need all the help at getting to the quarterback that we can get. if Porter is around in the third, we have to go for it. I don't want to see Pace, Thomas and Scott on this team next season. he can play the 4-3 and 3-4, and along with Te'o and Harris are pass rush will be improved immensely. 4. Brennan Williams (North Carolina, OT) - self-explanatory. we need OLine help, especially at RT. we can keep Howard around for depth at the position. great run blocker, something we need to get our ground and pound attack back to what it was a few years ago. a bit of a stretch getting him int he fourth, but he is injured right now. maybe he drops. 5. Brandon Ford (Clemson, TE) - would be a solid backup for Dustin Keller. we don't have any depth at TE and Keller is injury prone. there's also a chance we might not resign Keller, so either trading for a TE or drafting one is a good bet. I can see him going anywhere from the 4th to the 6th. 6. Spencer Long (Nebraska, G) - don't know much about him, but what I do know is that he is solid in pass protection. we need help and depth on our OLine to keep Sanchez upright. 7. Omar Hunter (Florida, DT) - don't know much about him either, but he's a young, fresh face. first time I ever did one of these. let me know what you think, any questions. etc.
Everyone speaks so highly of Manti, with a weak QB class, I don't see how he falls past 3rd. The Jets will prob be in the top 10 but no way in the top 3.
probably for the same reason Kuechly went 9th this year. Elite MLB prospects just don't go that high. And weak QB class or not, you can bet at least two in the top 10.
holmes isn't leaving and we have alot invested in hill. find me a game breaker rb instead of woods in the 2nd
Solid Mock. I love the players selected, just hard to tell where value is at this moment, especially with a guy like Woods who could either sky rocket or plummet. The pipe dream here is clearly Te'o but he'll easily be a top 5 selection, Jarvis Jones will most likely be out of reach too. I see both going no lower than 7 with the limited talent at QB. (I believe we'll go 7-9, which would give us a pick between 10-15). If we end up with a pick in the 10-15 area, I say trade back and acquire as many picks as we can. This team needs depth desperately, getting our hands on a few 2nd round or 3rd round guys as well as our traded back first would be an excellent way to add talent to this team with such limited cap space.
Agree. Lets develop what we got, maybe pick up a later round receiver and let him sit until Holmes goes. Get a solid quick running back 2nd or 3rd.
If we're looking for playmakers (and we should be) then we should be targeting WR's early. In fact we should be looking to add a couple. Personally, I love the Tennessee receivers (Hunter, Patterson and Da'Rick Rogers who left UT)
First off, I want to comment on your new avatar... I LOVE Barr. He's a straight up beast and honestly could be the best OLB in this class within a few years. I wrote a big post on him in the prospect thread a few days ago. Hopefully he comes out this year. Im not sure what his draft stock is, but I like him a hell of a lot more than Melvin Ingram of last year. He's almost like that Aldon Smith passrusher. I could see him having a huge rise during the draft process. Its only his first year playing defense, which is insane considering his play on the field. If we could trade down 5-10 picks and draft Barr while adding an extra 2nd, that would be ideal. Right now, outside of Jarvis Jones, Im not sure if I'd want any other OLB prospect... I also completely agree with trading down as you said. If Te'o and Jones are gone we should be trading down.
as we saw last year the trade down scenario not only depends on finding a partner but also having things play out for you up front. we may very well be in a similar draft position next year and of course trading back will be on the table again.
I tend to agree with you here. if we can't get Jones or Te'o I wouldn't be opposed to trading out of the first.
At this point I cant yet get behind picking a wideout early. There is no one in this class who really wows, though every Baylor game I watch seems to have Terrance Williams being a beast. Tone is still a good wideout and Kerley has been our best offensive player this year, combine that with Hill year two and we should be ok
I'm going to make a few changes, but I'll leave the original mock up in the first post. I like the idea of us moving down later into the first to acquire more second and third round picks. 1. Jake Matthews (Texas A&M, OT) - I don't think we would have a problem getting him in around pick 21-25. we need OLine help badly. would be an immediate starter at RT. 2. Chase Thomas (Stanford, OLB) - can play outside and inside, I like this kid. we need help on our pass rush desperately. he has a great motor as well. 2. Giovanni Bernard (North Carolina, RB) - this is the second best running back in the draft as of now, maybe the third. Gio and Greene would compliment each other well and we need to get our running attack to what it was a few years ago because Sanchez can't throw 400+ yds a game. it's hard to gauge where he will go, but with our first or second pick in the second, this is where I would go. 3. Sean Porter (Texas A&M, OLB) - see my original post, 3. Joseph Fauria (UCLA, TE) - there's a chance we might not resign Keller. Fauria is a top 3 TE in the draft. Eifert and Ertz will be off the board for sure. a solid blocking TE. 3. D.J. Fluker (Alabama, OT/G) - if Fluker is there we take him. we need all the OLine help we can get. this is only for the first three rounds.
I think Gio will emerge as the best RB in this draft, but like you said, its hard to gauge where exactly he will go. Teams that really need a RB are as follows: Green Bay, Steelers (depends on what happens with Dwyer and Mendenhall), Jags (depends on MJD and Jennings, both are FA's), and the Falcons. The good news about those teams listed, besides only being 4 out of 32 teams, is that they have much bigger issues than RB, while its one of our top needs. This could cause a slide into the second for Gio unless someone trades up. From that point I'd say he'd most likely go early in the second, right around where you selected Thomas. For the rest of the players in the draft I love them, my only issue is I doubt we could haul two 3rds and a second unless we moved from 10 to 25, which even then maybe a bit too high. But besides the trades and values I'd like to talk about another area of intrigue for me. You chose Fluker in the late 3rd, now besides what I think his actual value will be, why another Tackle? Are you planning on using him similar to how Seattle uses Carpenter as a LG (Right Guard in this case) instead of his prior position (LT)? Or is this just a depth move, Im curious to know.
Thanks man. He's been a beast, its incredible to me that he really doesnt have a plethora of pass rush moves or that much bulk, yet his explosiveness off the edge helps him get to the QB. He has loads of potential to me, he could easily add 10-15 pounds to his frame and keep the same explosiveness. Add some polished pass rush moves and you have one hell of an OLB. I'm not sure If I would necessarily recommend he come out this year but if he does he'd be a great choice early (rounds mid 1-2) in the draft, I'd be willing to bet he blows up the combine.
I'm a big Matthew's fan, but I'd only draft him if we are around the 15 range when the Jets are OTC. As, JTJ said, Gio could be a 1st rd pick. I'm not a Fluker fan, he's a terrible pass blocker and should be a guard since he's an excellent run blocker. We have Vlad, who's a great run blocker, don't need another work in progress at Guard.
