I didn't know much about him when we drafted him, but damn, now I am pumped to have this guy on our team. Check this out. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...-05-04_jets_pick_dwight_lowery_film_buff.html
Great article. Thanks for the link. The good feeling I've had about this kid since remembering him on draft day has turned into a great feeling. I'm trying to keep my expectations low, but my hopes high. I think he'll do wonderful things for us. Of course, after reading the last line, I think it's safe to say that if he were a Patriot, he'd have become the greatest CB ever to play the game: "There's nothing better as a football player than going into a game, knowing and understanding what a team wants to do," he said.
i think with his lack of speed but his amazing ball tracking ability and knowledge and hands he would make an above average FS.
He sounds like exactly the kind of player BB, Parcells, and the guys they taught to home in on. I love this Mangini quote too: "He saw the whole picture from the corner spot," Mangini said. "A lot of times, those corners come in and they say, 'Okay, I got that cat,' and that's pretty much it. You want them to see the big picture." It pretty much epitomizes everything they are trying to do with the franchise. Lowery's going to be a fan favorite fast...in the mold of Cotchery and Rhodes. He'll be a leader, he'll be tough, he'll work his ass off, and he'll learn real fast.
It's a quote of a (hypothetical) quote. With all the time Mangini spends with the youngsters, I'm sure he has a full vocabulary of colloquial and ebonic english.
According to his fitness coach, J-Dogg, Lowery had a hamstring pull that did not heal until well after the Pro Day at his school. This means that the Combine time and the Pro Day time were made with a gimpy leg. Let's see how he does. I'd much rather have a smart ballhawk with great instincts, than a 4.2 wonder who can't find the ball.
dude...is anybody else a bit concerned that mangini put lowery in the same company as ty law and OTIS SMITH!!!
i mean, the law comparison is great, but the smith comparison makes me nervous immediately! I have too many lasting images of that guy getting burned time after time after time! in all seriousness though, i sure hope we found another 4th round gem...he definitely has the potential and work ethic, now he just has to transfer that to the field.
i read that post and that was something that really stood out to me that he said. i am sure quite a few posters didnt see that post. i will have to try and search for it and link it here. he surely didnt look slow in his videos so we will have to wait and see what his game speed is.
O-T-I-S in his prime (and even after it) was a guy who, despite his propensity to be burned, could really intercept the ball. Turning the ball over is such a huge part of football, and I'm excited to have another guy on our defense who can do that. Turnovers can make a bend-but-don't-break defense work great, and they can make a bad offense look pretty good by giving them field position.
WOW, if this kid, Keller and Gholston all work out like it sounds they could, we really would have had a killer draft. If Henry, Ainge and/or Garner become anything real useful that would be gravy.
Agreed. I know Otis got burned a little too often, but if Lowery has a career remotely resembling Otis' (13 years in the NFL, 27 INTs, 7 TDs), than it was a heck of a pick by the Jets.
What? Turnovers can make a bend-but-dont-break defense work great? Since when? The BBDB defense is to keep to the offense from getting into the endzone too often, too quickly. It is used to avoid big plays while the corners give a cusion. Thats when the defense becomes real 'defensive'. Trying to create a turnover is where you become 'agressive'. Two totally different things. Having said that, lets hope Lowery takes care of the 2nd CB spot. Is there really a huge difference in 4.52 and 4.40? Its a difference of 0.12 seconds over a length of almost half a football field. That too due to the hamstring issue. If he can intercept, then speed does'nt really matter. You can always get some help from safeties if you're not as quick but if you can catch the ball, then you will have a bunch of ints. How many ints are dropped almost every game? I would say atleast 2-4 ints are dropped by corners just because they dont have good ball skills. To be honest, his hamstring worries me. I pulled my hamstring for the first time two yrs ago desperately diving for a catch. I have never fully recovered from that. I would say the best I've been after that would be 90-95%. It has affected my game. I hope it does'nt affect Lowery's game. If he's a real work out warrior, then he'll be just fine.
