I posted one about a month ago, and took a lot of the feedback and did some more research and have made some (significant) adjustments to my mock draft. I still have a few of the same players, especially in the UDFA portion of it, but have definitely adjusted it to better fill the team's needs while still going BPA. --------------------- Round 1: Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama I've been torn between Chance Warmack and Dion Jordan at this pick, but now that Jordan had a great combine he probably won't be available at 9. Regardless, Warmack is a safe pick and sets up the Jets' draft really well in the following rounds. Ideally, the Jets would trade down a few spots to get Warmack and pick up a couple later picks as well. The combine did nothing to make me think less of himRound 2: Gio Bernard, RB, UNC Gio Bernard has shown the ability to be a dual-threat out of the backfield and is just what the Jets need to fit in the new offense. Pairing him with Powell & McKnight is an instant upgrade at the RB position over Greene, and adds a bit of explosiveness to the team on an every-down basisRound 3: Quinton Patton, WR, LA Tech Patton was very productive while at LA Tech and shows a good blend of size and speed. The Jets need some talent at the WR position, especially with Holmes likely gone after 2013. As a 3rd round pick, he wouldn't be expected to contribute immediately (which a rookie WR generally shouldn't be), but could be developed and become a good WR for the team.Round 4: Brandon Jenkins, OLB, Florida St Before suffering a Lisfranc injury, he was a prospect on the rise projected to go as high as the first round. However, now the most recent film to go off of is his subpar Junior season and he won't be able to participate in the Senior Bowl. Since he didn't run at the combine, its hard to see how far he has come from his foot injury. Depending on how he performs at the Pro Day, he could be a great mid-round pick if he lasts this long to add more speed and youth the the LBers.Round 5: Michael Buchanan, DE/OLB, Illinois I originally had Tyrann Mathieu here, but I'm now thinking he will get drafted in the 3rd round, 4th at the latest. Buchanan had a great sophomore year, but didn't play nearly as well this past year. He has freakish size and ability at 6'5"+ and weighing in at 255 while running a 4.78 40 while putting up 22 reps on the bench. If Rex can get him to play to his potential, he could be an absolute steal this late in the draft.Round 6: Zach Line, FB, SMU Line is a bit of a tweener in the backfield, as he could be a power RB or a finesse FB. In the WCO, I like his potential as a FB who can be a threat out of the backfield when they go with a 2-back set. He ran a 4.77 40 at the Combine and measured in at 6 foot and 232 pounds. Also, here is a blurb from an SI article… "He's a large, hard-charging ball carrier with terrific vision and football instincts. Adept at carrying the ball as well as catching it, the 230-pound athlete is averaging 4.8 yards on 235 carries this season and has 31 receptions. Line offers potential in the NFL as a feature back for a power running game or fullback in a west coast offense."Round 7: Sean Renfree, QB, Duke Has prototypical size for a QB at 6'4", 225-lbs. Should warrant strong consideration in the late rounds and I'm hoping he lasts until our pick in the 7th, especially after tearing his pectoral muscle in his last game - might be better off switching the 6th and 7th round picks I have here. He would be a developmental pick and would be a great guy to stash on the bottom of the depth chart while developing him and seeing what he can do. Also, David Cutcliffe (who coached both Peyton & Eli in college) is a big supporter of Renfree... --------------------- UDFA: Luke Willson, TE, Rice Has great size at 6'5", 250-lbs but didn't put up great numbers due to lack of production and injuries. Would definitely be a project pick, but as an UDFA its worth taking a look because of his size and speed (4.7 40-yard dash). He performed well in the 2013 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl (3 rec, 46 yards, 1 TD) which leads me to believe his lack of productions could have been a product of the offensive system at Rice - which I admittedly know nothing about. His teammate, Vance McDonald, has been getting some good attention since the Combine.UDFA: Colby Cameron, QB, LA Tech Cameron seems to be a QB with a lot of potential, and is definitely worth taking a flyer on, especially if he lasts to be an UDFA. In the limited video I've seen from him, he seems to have good arm strength, decent mechanics, and good timing on the short/intermediate routes. I also like the idea of bringing in a Cameron over a different QB here because of the Patton pick earlier. Measured in at a touch above 6'2" and weighed in at 212lbs while running a 4.78UDFA: Erik Highsmith, WR, UNC Decent size at 6'1", 190-lbs and adequate speed. Why not take a flyer on him and see what he can do. Ended his career at UNC 3rd all-time in receptions.UDFA: Ryan Spadola, WR, Lehigh Set a Patriot League record his Junior year with 1,614 receiving yards, and had 11 touchdowns on 96 catches. He has pretty good size and speed, measuring in at 6'1", 205-lbs and clocking in at 4.48 at the Combine in the 40-yard dash. Good route runner and solid hands as well. He's a local kid from NJ, wouldn't surprise me if Eagles are interested as well since he's from Lehigh where they host training campUDFA: Conner Vernon, WR, Duke I don't think he will last to become an UDFA, I think he'll go in the 5-7th round, but I'm a fan of pairing QBs with WRs they are familiar with. So if the Jets were to get Renfree in the 7th and Vernon were available, I'd like to see it happen.--------------------- Alternative that I was thinking would have gone as follows: 1) Dion Jordan, OLB, Oregon (or Moore/Mingo) 2) Gio Bernard, RB, UNC 3) Kyle Long, OG/OT, Oregon 4) Tony Jefferson, S, Oklahoma
If Bernard is available there he should be the pick. I also sort of doubt Patton is there. I feel like he's a second rounder now. Good prospects at OLB also, but I'd be a little wary of counting on a pair of day three picks to be the main contributors. Also, I'd rather see a TE than a FB. Ultimately I think the Jets address the pass-rushing situation earlier, but overall I'd be happy if the draft looked like this
This would be the perfect draft in my opinion. The offense would be set with a feature back and a LG that could make the offensive line one of the best in the league. Unfortunately we can't trade down and take Warmack because the Titans would scoop him up immediately with their pick. I would enjoy either Warmack, Dion Jordan or D. Moore with the 9th pick
I like this draft, would be pretty happy with it. We just have so many holes and needs that we can go so many different directions
I like it a lot, I think a steal could be Buchanan, Illinois just produces good NFL players, not great, but they don't bust, aside from Benn, he has been underused
As some other posters have mentioned, strong likelihood Patton will not be there in the third, but this is all projection. If he isn't there, there will probably be another good wide receiver at the Jet's 3rd-rounder. There are probably 10 wide receivers that would be good picks for anyone after selection 20, so one of them will likely make it to the Jets' 3rd. Point is, as you did, 3rd round is a good time to target a WR. I'm not crazy about Buchanan, particularly at 3-4 OLB. There are lots of pass rushers that could be available in the 5th that I like more. Granted, I only specifically watched Buchanan in one game last year, but I didn't like his effort. Guys that could/should be available in the 5th I'd take over him for that role: Armonty Bryant, East Central (OK) Brandon Sharpe, Syracuse Walter Stewart, Cincinnati Quanterus Smith, Western Kentucky Ja'Gared Davis, Southern Methodist Overall, I like how you've structured your draft. I would be surprised if Cameron goes undrafted, though, and I'm surprised you didn't take a safety. Might want to use that sixth or seventh on a safety, such as Rontez Miles, Brandan Bishop, or Cody Davis.
Not a bad list of players at all. I'd much rather the Jets drafted an H-back than a FB though. FB's are a dying breed at this point.
I think maybe i'd swap the positions you're drafting in the 3rd and 4th but other than that..not bad. I also think i'd go TE before WR. IMHO Some great TE's in this draft...not so much at WR
A plus on the visual I like it a lot. Only change I might make is Escobar in the third. We need a te badly and draft has some interesting ones
