You have a lot of attention on a foolish sport like American football and you waste a lot of talent, athletic talent, on a sport that is meant to kill each other, to injure each other. … You’re so narrow-minded, and then you want to compete against the world [in other sports] when you waste a lot of time, good talent on a sport that sucks. The suit was one of the reasons. But not because it was bad. It is because they believed it was bad. In skating, you have to believe in yourself like Americans always do. Americans always believe they're right, always believe that they're the best. That's not true ... when you look at the rest of the world. You can stay inside in your own country, you can make your own game, like American football. Do it your own and think you're the best of the world. But no way. When you play soccer, man, you're just not half — you're not belonging to the top 30 of the world, so quit. When you come every four years, you come to Olympic Stadium and you want to fight the rest of the world, then you know your place. You got zero medals. Zero, man. You can’t stand losing, you must be an American, man! You’re just envious, man, for our medals! Can any of you history buffs fill me in on the Dutch.
Putrid take. He obviously doesn't understand the schematics and strategy of football. It's human fucking chess. I hate non-fans and their stereotype that football is just big dudes running into each other, it's so much more.
Obviously don't give a damn about his opinion of American football, and don't see why anyone else would either. What is much more to the point is that he apparently knows absolutely nothing about the recent history of his own sport. The Dutch were overwhelmingly the best this year, and the US was awful, but in the three previous Olympics the US team earned 19 medals, the second-most of any country in the world (the Dutch had 24). Not bad for a country "that comes every four years", asshole - imagine how the US would do if the country actually gave a damn about the sport?
he's right in that our best athletes play football(and basketball), we could dominate any sport if those athletes played other sports but we focus on real sports- not speed skating or luge.
