I'm not way too familiar with a 3-4 defense, know the basics in terms of needing big guys to occupy blockers and free up the linebackers, etc. But how is it for the secondary? With a safety tandem of Miller and newly aquired Andre Dyson, the Jets can play alot more man-to-man instead of the base Cover-2 that we've seen for the last 5 years... Could the Jets have 8 men in the box more often with leaving their corners and having Kerry Rhodes play Centerfield due to the fact that Dyson is an agressive corner and Miller is still learning? Rhodes has the range to cover alot, and seeminly has good instincts... Is they key in the secondary to have fast Corners, and again, a safety over the top at all times to help out? Rather than have both safties help each Corner or tight-end, or both safties cover half the field in the Cover-2? Maybe Erik Coleman benefiting more since he is a good tackler and can play more up to the line instead of covering an entire half of the field? What my main question is, what are the functions of the secondary in a successful 3-4? Thanks:up:
Secondary really is independent of the front seven. They can still play cover 2, cover 3, cover 4, man, whatever the hell they want.
I don't think its much different. The Patriots like to bring their corners up close and bump then cover uderneath then rely on their safeies to play the deep balls. Pretty much your basic cover 2. Perhaps with two ILBs you could drop your safeties further toward the sidelines to protect against the deep out.
Man, our team is going to be able to play whatever we want, straight up. Barrett likes playing his man deep so he can come in at 2 or 1 at times and play like that for that play, then play dyson on the side they blitzing from, to try to pass defend or intercept that ball, or tackle the fullback or HB when the qb thinks of throwing to the flat quickly and thinks he is getting a couple of yards atleast, or vice versa, miller will play 1 or 2 as well everybody is i think. No one is at one position, play to their strenghts. Mangini knows whats up.
