    (from the Brodie Croyle thread)

Assuming we get a 1st and 3rd for Abraham, or a 1st for Abraham, and a comp'd 3rd for Jordan... With 5 day 1 picks, how would you feel about this.

    1a. AJ Hawk - LB,Ohio State
1b. Gabe Watson - DT, Michigan
    2. Jonathan Scott - OT, Texas
3a. Brodie Croyle - QB, Alabama
3b. Fred Matua - OG, USC

I'm taking Hawk to the bank assuming a switch to the 3-4 defense. We solve our NT problem for good with Watson. Scott and Matua join Jones and Moore as our long term answer for the OL, though we'll still need a center when Mawae departs.

I'm taking Croyle, but there is no way he plays a live snap in 2006. I want him worked on by a NFL calibre staff to make sure his knees are as good to go as possible. Barring a miracle recovery by Penny, Croyle's our starter in 2007.

I know I know. "But you didn't take a RB on the 1st day!" Well boo freaking hoo. Behind a proper OL, Houston and Blaylock are going to excel. We can always grab a guy on day 2 to come to the party as well.

I don't see Croyle falling to the 3rd round and I don't see how we can justify going after a LB with our first pick when we clearly need much more help on offense.

Can't say I'd complain, but I am not one who thinks we should be drafting a LB considering all of our other needs. Maybe we could pick up DeAngelo Williams there...

Croyle could certainly fall to the 4th pick of the 3rd round. If we have to sneak into the 2nd to grab him, so be it.

In a 4-3, we have a solid LB corps, in a 3-4 we would be awfully thin. Hawk is arguably the best defensive player in the draft, and combined with Vilma, would wreak havok on opposing offenses. Remember, my plan includes trading Abraham, which seems like an impending move to me. We need to replace his game changing ability, and defensive game changers come in the first round. Keep in mind we are also losing Law. We're going to need to force opposing offenses to react fast to protect our average defensive backfield.

Where do we really need help on offense? RB - We have Martin with Houston and Blaylock in reserve. WR - Coles, Cotchery, McCareins are a fine group of receivers. We could use a true deep threat, but one trick ponies like that can be had on day 2. TE - Baker, Jolley, Dreesen are a nice complimentary set. QB - That's why I'm drafting Croyle. OL - I'm drafting 2 lineman that were in the national championship game. First round lineman are a reach to me. When you have a top 5 pick you get a game changer. The dropoff from first round defensive talent to second round is huge. The dropoff for the OL is minimal.

    All just my opinion though.

I would not cry one bit if we grabbed Williams or White in the first round, but only if Martin is being released. I'm just of the opinion that RB's have a short life span, and can generally start as rookies. Since I don't see us challenging for much in 2006, I'm in no rush to draft a first round rb. I'd like to give Houston a shot with a healthy, talented OL, and at least a meaningful threat of a passing game. I really think he can be diamond in the rough. I'm looking to the 2007 draft for a RB if Houston doesn't work out.

i like this plan.........i've been hating the talk about getting ferguson with our 4th overall pick. Hawk is worthy of being picked that high.....like you said, hes a game-changer and would be a monster with Vilma. Id like to see us put together a good 3-4

I dont know much about the lineman youve chosen, but im sure u know what ur talking about.

And I think Croyle would be a good pick as well.

I don't like ignoring offense in the 1st round, although Watson would be a good pickup, and absolutely necessary if and when we switch to a 3-4.

I like Croyle, but he has poor mobility and bad knees, so he's a career-ending injury waiting to happen unless we put a good OL in front of him. His mechanics are a bit raw too, which hopefully Schottenheimer can fix.

Why does everyone want a defensive players in the early rounds. That wasn't the Jets problem last year and it hasnt been for the past 3 to 4 years. Mangini should be able to put together a solid defense with the players the Jets have now and throw in a couple of mid round draft choices and wisely FA aquistions and we should be in good shape on defense. We have to add playmakers on offense in the early rounds

I love Hawk and would love to see the Jets draft him. It's so funny when people say defense wasn't the problem last year... did they wach the KC game? How about the Denver game? Atlanta game? Carolina? New Orleans? Even both games against Buffalo? Our defense was terrible last year. Could our defense stop anybodys running game? I think the Cardinals would rush for 100 yards against this defense.

I'm with ya on the Hawk pick...

There is one issue.... I don't see anybody giving up a 1st for Abe let alone a 1st and a 3rd. To aquire 5 picks on day 1 this is a more likely scenario. Trade down with Detroit or Arizona for their 1st and 2nd. The trade Abe which would likley warrant a 2nd round pick. That gives you three 2nd rounders.

I value your opinion, but where on offense would you like to go in the 1st round?

QB - I could certainly be wrong, but I'm not buying Cutler at this point. Leinart will be gone unless we trade up (a huge mistake), and I wouldn't touch Young (bust).

RB - Like I said above, I could live with this. However, only if we are going to release Martin. I honestly think Martin, Houston, and Blaylock can get the job done.

WR - None with serious 1st round potential.

    TE - Ditto.

OL - Sorry, it's just not a value pick in the 1st. If we got a late 1st for Abe, I wouldn't mind a RT. As a top 10 pick, no way.

That's why I'm all about D in the 1st round this year. RichMiano summed up my feelings pretty well regarding our 2005 D.

What playmaker are you targeting forthe 1st round? Other than Williams or White, there aren't any. With the guys we already have, RB just isn't our problem.

I like this if we're truly going to the 3-4. We still get two good OL guys to help the line, though we definitely need to look for a center but there was talk of LeCharles Bently being available via FA and if we trade or cut Mawae and Kendall and restructure a few guys we may be able to afford him. I also think we have some young OL guys with potential on the roster but we sure could use the competition and depth.

Croyle will not last until the 3rd. He may be there late first and we would be wise to take him then. Broadway Bro!!

The same way you can justify taking a kicker with your first pick in the draft-when you need WR help.
