Don't go off the deep end folks. We're headed for the NFL basement in 06.We're the Titanic without Kate Winslet. Am I being dramatic? Maybe but the fact is we have big problems in no particular order. 1)Salary cap which is way over the top 2)Starting QB which is linked to Salary cap 3)Rookie H/C and a GM who for all intent and purpose is new to the game as well. 2006 will be a getting to know you year for Mangini's Jets. That's why I'm in favor of rebuilding the defense ASAP.A strong defense will at lrast keep you close in games with the ability to pull out a few close games. The Jets are in full rebuilding mode this will take several years to build a contending team. Going off in every direction will soon get you no where. I'm sure if the "boys" are as smart as people say they are they will be on their way to building a SB contender. The 06' season will be hard to watch at times so be prepared for a 5 win year and if we win more then that be happy.
I'd say we're in for a couple of rough years. Anyone who thinks different is probably being overly optimistic, but hey we ARE jets fans right? Optimism is our sword, and "next year" is our battle cry
So long as we draft a few Olineman and a QB for the future (Cutler) and Cut Chad this year we should be able to compete some next year and maybe even a push for 8-8 or the playoffs in 2008 Obviously thats not all we have to do to turn this thing around, but we reall need to go get our QB. That is really important.
As long as we use '06 to dump salary and age, I'm ok with losing for the forseable future. We need to get out from under these contracts and in a year where we'll have absolutely NOTHING going on from a playoff run POV, there's absolutely no reason why we can simply take all the cap hits coming in ONE season and be done. At best, simply draft a QB that's serviceable and capable of showing the new kid the ropes. No other UFA should even be on the Jet's radar.
What we need to do for this upcoming year is see progress from our young and talented defense, and start the rebuilding process on O. This includes establishing an identity from at least one skill position and building the foundation of a quality OL. Anyone who expects more than 6 wins this coming season is dreaming. And if we did get more than 6 wins, we'd be screwed. this team needs a low pick next April.
It appears that way. Mangini will get a pass for 2006. Having DirecTv I got to see the NE beat writers take on Mangini when he was signed vby the Jets on FOX NE and NESN. Bellichik took over all the defensive meetings and Mangini just sat silently in the game planning meetings. In his introductory news conference with the Jets he came across as nervous and not a very strong leader. If the players turn on him after mid season, he won't last very long. He's not Nick Saban and he's not Romeo Crennel or Charlie Weiss either. And forget the 'pedigree'. Jimmy Johnson's ass'ts with Miami and Dallas were real hot at one time too, his tree produced Norv Turner, Dave Wannstedt and Butch Davis as HC's in the NFL. Pedigree means nothing.
No way!!! All we need is Cutler. He will give us an identity which will get us to the playoffs in 2006. Garunteed!!!
We've gotta address the Oline in the draft. Take a QB #1 if we're letting Penny go. Don't think this is the time to draft defense. We've done that the last several years.
You mean Olines are for good teams? Hey, we've got Coles, McCariens, Cotchery. We're going to have to live with that for awhile.
Our defense is pretty young. Defense is mostly schemes anyway, we have most of the players we need to execute the schemes, or atleast theoretically we do. A few draft picks to shore up the holes and we'll be fine (NT is the big one). Remember, Jason Ferguson was a 7th round pick. Maybe Pouha will be ready this year, and even if he isn't, Mangini will probably force him to play and show us that he can't learn. We're going to find out just what we have this year on defense. Probably on offense too. If you're on the team, we're going to see if you can play. No more sitting on the bench because you're "not ready". O-line is heavily coaching too. You don't need a line full of first round picks, although it's nice to have a few first day picks (which we'll have this year I'm sure). It will probably take about a season for the rookies to learn how to play O-line in the NFL and with each other, but I expect to see improvement from last year. The zone-blocking scheme is retarded, and Fabini is done. Otherwise, the line isn't AS bad as we saw this year. McNeill would be a great pickup, and would fix a LOT of problems quickly.
This team is ready to compete in 06. Make a few good offseason moves and stay healthy, then we will be back in the playoffs in 06.
Coles, McCariens, and Cotchery is not a bad group of receivers at all. I really think Cotchery can step up within a year or two for that number 2 receiver. WR is not what we should be worried about in my opinion.
Draft a stud RB, sign/trade for a stud QB, and patch up the OL in the draft and FA and we are set. Our D is already good, the 05 jets would've gone atleast 10-6 had they been healthy. So stay healthy, patch up a few holes, and we are fine.
You think it's that easy to totally overhaul the QB, RB, and OL positions, and have ALL of them immediately play great?
