Don Cardwell dies at age 72

    For those who were there for the Miracle Mets of 1969, this is sad news. His most memorable game of that season was when he and Jerry Koosman each pitched 1-0 complete game shutouts in a doubleheader, where the pitcher drove in the only run in each game (Cardwell had a reputation as a decent hitter, so it wasn't as much of a surprise as Koosman doing it, since Kooz was an awful hitter). He won 5 straight games down the stretch as the Mets came from way back to win going away. He is the seventh member of that team to pass away (Agee, Cardwell, Clendenon, Koonce, and McGraw plus Hodges and Walker). RIP.

    I remember that double header. A day after Johnny Podres. Rest In Peace.
