Hey Everyone, I hope you're enjoying your offseason. I know I have so far as it's really allowed Jets fans to be excited for the first time in a long time. It's a good feeling. Anyways, I like to do two mock drafts each offseason so this will be my first one and the second one will probably come a week before the draft. I hope you enjoy it ROUND 1, WR from ALABAMA, AMARI COOPER I'm sure some people here will be disappointed that Mariota isn't the pick here, but I just don't see the Jets selecting him. I have my reasons, but this isn't about Mariota, it's about Cooper. It wouldn't surprise me if the Jets had him 2nd or 3rd on their big board and picked him based on him being the best player available. He is one of the most fluid athletes I can remember coming out of college as he runs crisp routes and has a knack getting separation. His hands are above average for the position, although he did lack focus at some points and dropped easy balls. He makes up for it with spectacular catches and amazing yards after the catch ability. He is also versatile as you can play him inside or outside. The kid has only been playing serious football for 2 years, it's scary to think that he is only scratching his potential. The thought of Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, and Amari Cooper should give defensive coordinators nightmares, even with Geno Smith or Fitzpatrick being the Quarterback. If we pick Cooper, don't be surprised if he ends up being the greatest WR to ever wear the Jets logo. Highlight Plays ROUND 2, OT from OREGON, JAKE FISHER Fisher is someone that has been recently driving up draft boards, but it''s still not crazy to think he will be there at the top of the 2nd round. The guy is a technician of the game as he does a great job with bend, hand placement, and mirroring the pass rushers feet. He has long arms, which are extremely important for an OT and does a good job at latching onto defenders and keeping them at bay. The only knock on Fisher is he isn't the most athletic tackle you'll see. He sometimes doesn't have the foot speed off the snap and can get beat instantly. He can't recover and it results in a breakdown in protection. Still, I would prefer to take the technician over the athletic freak that has no idea what he's doing. Through good coaching and reps, I could see Fisher being an above average OT in this league ROUND 3, OLB from Washington, Hau'Oli Kikaha These are the type of picks that I love, the late fallers that shouldn't have really fallen in the first place. Kikaha has had TWO ACL surgeries, but this past season I really liked what was on film. He has decent burst off of the line, but his hand usage is above average when rushing the passer. He uses his hands to swipe away at tackles and bend the edge, which is pretty impressive. He also possesses great strength and can hold his own at the point of attack. My only problem is that I didn't really see him operate that much in space and I wouldn't feel comfortable initially dropping him into coverage. He also can have sloppy tackling technique at times, but that can be fixed with coaching ROUND 4, S from LOUISVILLE, GEROD HOLLIMAN I think some people will be surprised to see Holliman here, but I actually wouldn't be surprised to see him slip farther than this. Holliman literally has ZERO interest in the run, it's almost downright embarrassing. His tackling is pretty piss poor and he isn't extremely athletic either. So why would I want to draft this guy? The stat of 14 interceptions in 1 season still speaks volumes and it is apparent that Holliman has superb instincts. He sits on routes and reads the quarterbacks eyes to try to force a turnover, which is still extremely valuable even with his lack of run support. I ultimately believe Bowles could help improve Holliman's run game while also putting him in situations to do what he does best, which is locate the ball and make a play on it. This has the potential to be a steal of the draft pick or a pick that is a total miss. I'm willing to take that risk here ROUND 7, OLB from TENNESSEE-CHATTANOOGA, DAVIS TULL Late round picks are obviously tough to pick correctly, but I prefer to go with players that have athletic ability that can potentially learn how to play the position and be good depth. Tull injured his hamstring so he wasn't able to participate at the Combine, but he still ran a 4.57 at his pro day, which is great. With that kind of speed, he can keep up with tightends in coverage, which is something we've lacked. He won't wow you with his pass rush moves, But I still like him for his athletic ability and depth. I'm also high on IK so we will see what happens
Imagine this group of receivers with Cooper added too? Wow. Would love an OT in the 2nd and Fisher looks like a good prospect to me. I don't like Holliman much. Even with his playmaking ability, he's been a shockingly bad tackler such that I don't even think he's worth that spot. He was literally the worst tackler in FBS football last year. Also carries significant effort/character concerns. Would rather go in another direction than safety anyway. I like Tull, but IMO he could go on Day 2 and will be long gone in the 7th. What's missing from this draft is another RB Also, they have another 7th rounder from the Marhsall trade, so pick again
Cooper would be an amazing pick..and even though WR is not a huge need right now it could be a year from now. Next years crop of wideouts dont look anywhere as good as this years. I agree that Cooper has the potential to be the best Jets WR ever. Would be hard to pass on him. But since the latest reports have us taking a RB in the first 3 rounds I think its much more likely we see OLB , RB and OL in that order.
Cooper is still the pick for me if the QB's are gone. I think he is the most pro ready receiver in years. Fisher is a great pick but he did himself a lot of favors having a good pro day and combine.
I would take Cooper in a heartbeat. I watched all Alabama's games last year and he was outstanding. He's not the biggest W/R by a long way, but his route running is so good and his change of gear pace is second to none. He goes through gaps that no-one else could, on sheer pace alone. O/T or OLB with Second Round pick is the way to go. We should go with the best available. I would be surprised if we didn't take a Q/B in the later rounds too.
I'd take an RB in the third, but otherwise it looks pretty good! I think we'll definitely be seeing 3/4 of OLB, OL, WR, RB in the first three rounds.
Good work. I hope Fisher lasts to the second. I've been high on him but he bad a good combine and is on the rise. If he jumps to the first, guys like Peat or Flowers might fall down to our pick. Glad u addressed offensive line though - franchise offensive tackles are rarely a position you can get in free agency.
Other than Hollister in the 4th I really like this mock. I could see Tull playing some ILB to provide some depth there. He might could fill the role that Jamie Collins gives the Patsies, playing inside and outside. I see a lot of sites are projecting him in the 4th so maybe he becomes our 4th round pick over Hollister. Love the Cooper pick and if Fisher can replace Breno I'm all for it.
Don't like it. I can't pass up Mariota for a WR where we could get a player 90% of, as good as or possibly better than Cooper at the top of round 2. There are no QBs after the top 2 that are anywhere near the prospect of Mariota. Cooper is a SUPREMELY gifted WR but he might not even be the best in this draft class and there are quite a few good ones to be had later on. I just can't sign up for that. _
I know what you are saying but this is only an issue IF Mariota is there and IF you think he is a true franchise QB - so I can certainly see why people are looking at other options (even though I would personally take Mariota if he was there) I like the mock overall though - the only thing that will really annoy me in this draft is if we go for a RB in any of the first three rounds!
My point was, in his mock he's by-passing Mariota for a WR. As I think Mariota is that franchise guy, I can't agree with passing him up. Look, if TB and Tenn go QB 1 and 2, after a good cry I'll move on to plan B and I'd definitely advocate for trading back. And Kevin White could be a better pro than Cooper. _
What a refreshing post to see someone pulling for an Offensive player for our 6th pick. Amari Cooper? Great player no doubt about that. But this is WR overkill and some posters here understand the need for a QB. Not taking MM would be ludicrous. All the foaming at the mouth for receiver combos take no consideration how bad Geno and how somewhat better Fitz is . IF THE QB PROBLEM IS NOT ADDRESSED WE REALLY HAVE HALF A TEAM UNLESS YOU WANT TO LOAD UP ON BEER AND PRETZELS AND ROOT FOR THE JET DEFENSE. NO POINTS NO WINNING.
Pretty much this. You need to keep taking QB's until you get one who can lead your franchise. Not to mention there will be several good WR's at the top of the 2nd.
Getting Abdullah in the 2nd round wouldn't be bad. Our RBs are alright but could definitely be much better
