Remember the last time Tannenbaum gave a QB a contract extension after 3 decent seasons?

Kidding aside, I think Tannehill has potential to be really really good. Parker and Stills should help. I think they've got their guy.

Geno suddenly wishes he had been drafted by the dolphins.

6 games in 3 years against a stretch of poor Jets football teams:

57.5% completion percentage, 4TDs/6INTs total. 2-3 record with 1 DNF due to injury.

I'll take our chances playing him through 2020

Oh, I take back my comment. I like him but not that much. They'll have a hard time building around him with that contract.

They certainly are banking on him being elite-like.

That is Tanny throwing cash again

Per source, Ryan Tannehill gets $21.5 million fully guaranteed at signing. More details coming at PFT.

Really good extension in terms of value. Tannehill just got $16 million a year, a few months (or maybe a year) before guys like Wilson and Luck will be getting $22 million a year.

If he continues his upward trajectory, this will be an extremely cheap contact IMO. If not, I bet it's pretty team friendly (given the guarantee, etc.)

Not really. With the increasing cap, this is a standard "average Qb" contract. If Joe Flacco can make $20 million a year, Tannehill making $16 won't be much by 2020.

Flacco also won a SB and has several playoff wins. He's a better QB too.

IDK, Tannehill doesn't make anyone on the team better, he still has woeful deep ball accuracy, and questionable ball placement skills. That deal could hurt the Fins down the road.

True. But way more guaranteed than Dalton, who's a similar performer. On the bright side for them it's nowhere near the Cutler contract and the rising salary cap should help.

IMO the reason the cap has been and will be going up so much each year is so that more teams can accommodate big QB contracts, I'm not saying he's worth it but more competitive teams is good for business and they have made the rules so QB friendly that even the averages QBs are able to put up stats that end up being used in QB negotiations. I'm not extremely impressed with Tannehill but I'd say he's around the league average for performance. We still haven't seen the way the contract is structured yet but I think people felt the same way when Kaep for his contract and then the details made it easier to stomach. 45m guaranteed is a lot though

it's an aggressive move that could end up saving them money in the long run, but it's jumping the gun too soon imo...
how about making the playoffs before shelling out Suh level money?

might not be much to build around after paying those 2 top dollar.
that's always been Tanny's MO tho, pay thru the nose for a group of guys, and have the rest at league min. it gets you stars, but not much for total team quality and virtually no depth.

smart move, good value, better timing. (ahead of luck, wilson and newton, nice)

relative to other major QB deals this is pretty middle of the road, which is appropriate for Tannehill who, relative to other major QB's, is pretty middle of the road.

The biggest thing is that they have answer they feel comfortable with, and are committed to him. they also have a set of young weapons around him on the cheap. Suh's deal is a goddamned whale in the room though which could potentially sink the fins chances of improving in other spots through FA, so their youth better put up or shut up.

    Why?

He is a good, young QB who has improved every single year.

That was a smart move by the Dolphins.

It was an apology for the rumors about Peyton Manning. Horrible move to save face.
