for each round I'm going to put a few selections, the top guy would obviously be the guy to draft, imo. but the others will be there if that guy should be taken off the board. ROUND 1 01: Manti Te'o (ILB, Notre Dame) - this is the guy I want in this draft more than ever. he will be tough to get, but there's always a possibility he can fall. now what to do with David Harris, he is owned a lot of money, so it's hard to imagine a team trading for him. BUT if a team is desperate I think we can get great value for him. Jake Matthews (OT, Texas A&M) - if Te'o is off the board, we throw defense out the window in the first and focus on the offensive line. Matthews is a stud, an is easily the best RT in the draft. Austin Howard is a guy I think would transition to the guard position, so we can keep him around. Chance Warmack (OG, Alabama) - if the above two are off the board we go to Warmack. who I think we shouldn't have a problem getting because the guard position is undervalued. Warmack is being scouted as one of the best guards in years. Brandon Moore may not be back, and he's old anyway so Warmack would be a solid pick. Ezekiel Ansah (DE, BYU) - if everyone above is off the board we look towards Ansah. Ziggy Ansah is a raw product but for the short time he has been playing football he picks the game up fast. we could start him as an outside linebacker, a position we need a lot of help with. ROUND 2 02: Giovani Bernard (RB, North Carolina) - there's a chance Gio may not be on the board early in the second, but if he is the Jets should be all over him. he's an explosive back and paired with Powell we have a solid backfield. Larry Warford (OG, Kentucky) - we take Warford if Gio is off the board and Warmack wasn't selected by us in the first round. Warford is my favorite guard in the draft behind Warmack so getting him would do wonders for our OLine. Mke Glennon (QB, NC State) - Glennon is my favorite QB in the draft, but a lot of teams need QB's so he could go in the first round. Nonetheless if he's still on the board, we take him in a heartbeat. Chase Thomas (OLB, Stanford) - Chase is a guy I could see going late first round. he's a playmaker and has a high motor, but if he's around in the second round and the three players above are gone we roll with him. Tyler Eifert (TE, Notre Dame) - this is a complete longshot, but I could see Eifert dropping to the second. the Packers are getting rid of Finley and Gonzales is retiring so ATL will be in the market, but I think both teams pass on him because they have bigger needs. with Keller possibly not returning we need a huge body with great hands to fill the position. ROUND 3 03: Landry Jones (QB, Oklahoma) - it shouldn't be an issue getting Jones in the 3rd, we obviously only take him if Glennon wasn't selected. Landry needs work but I like his play. he wouldn't be a starter just yet, but with the right coaches and development he could be in 2014. Tank Carradine (DE, Florida State) - Tank will drop in the draft due to injury, I like him a lot but it seems most of his sacks came at the expense of Werner picking up double coverage. anyway he would be a great pick for us in the 3rd, start him linebacker. Marcus Lattimore (RB, South Carolina) - if we didn't get Bernard in the second, Lattimore would be an obvious choice. he's coming off a freak injury, but when healthy he's an explosive runner. I would love to have a Bernard/Lattimore combo, but this team has too many needs to draft 2 running backs. Bacarri Rambo (S, Georgia) - Laron Landry possibly won't be back, so just in case we need to fill the safety position. Rambo has good football IQ and is great in coverage. he's had some trouble off the field, but he'll be fine. would be a fantastic pick for us in the 3rd if everyone above is taken. ROUND 4 04: Quinton Patton (WR, Louisana Tech) - I love QP. a few people have him going as high as the first round, but I think he's a 3-5 round pick. the Jets could use some depth at the WR position, we all saw the troubles we had when Santonio Homes went down, they were bringing in a new guy every week. Patton could play the slot and could be our Wes Welker or Percy Harvin. Trevardo Williams (OLB, Connecticut) - I saw this guy in Bradway's mock and couldn't help but agree with the pick. he had 11.5 sacks his senior year and 12.5 in his junior year he can get to the QB and this is one of our biggest problems. Alex Hurst (OT, LSU) - Hurst is a left tackle, but he could be moved over to RT. if Matthews isn't taken in the 1st round he would be a solid pick. I don't see him as a starter quite yet, would be behind Howard. ROUND 5 05: Isaiah Johnson (S, Georgia Tech) - round 5 would be a great round to grab a safety, especially if we didn't grab Rambo int he 3rd. Johnson was GT's best defender this season and is a solid cover safety, paired along with Landry (if he resigns) would be a boost for our already scary secondary. Zeke Motta (S, Notre Dame) - Zeke reminds me a lot of Landry. a hard hitting safety with explosiveness towards the ball. he's decent in coverage. Jake Stoneburner (TE, Ohio State) - if we haven't grabbed a tight end yet now would be a good place to do so. Stoneburner has good hands and is a big body for whoever our QB is next season. he's had trouble off the field, but I don't think it becomes a problem. ROUND 6 06: Tyrann Mathieu (CB, formerly LSU) - if Mathieu is around in the 6th I say why not. he won't be a starting corner in this league, I like him mostly for his ST presence. he could be our new punt/kick returner and could maybe even play safety. I think he's too small to play corner. Michael Mauti (ILB, Penn State) - Mauti is one of the best linebackers in the country it's too bad he went down to injury. if we didn't get Te'o in the first, Mauti is a must. similar to Te'o in the leadership aspect and has phenomenal coverage skills. Joe Vellano (DT, Maryland) - Vellano had a great senior year, but would be a depth move for us at the DT position. I like the pick especially if we can grab him in the sixth. ROUND 7 07: Philip Lutzenkirchen (TE, Auburn) - even if we already picked up Eifert or Stoneburner in the earlier rounds I would still take Lutzenkirchen here. he is great value in the 7th round and will probably fall this far due to injury. he was one of Cam Newton's go to guys when he played with him, but after he left he suffered from poor QB play. he is a big bodied TE who can block and can catch all the passes. Dustin Hopkins (K, Florida State) - I know what your thinking, Hopkins is a kicker but Folk is on the way out. his inconsistent play over the years is driving me crazy, we could easily save the draft pick and sign a new kicker but I say we start off new and draft a fresh, young kicker. he had a solid season at FSU and a pick I wouldn't mind taking in the 7th especially if Lutz is gone.
If Hurst gets drafted it would be later, the guy lost his job to a freshman and was off the team for a while for personal reasons. Tank Carradine would be a great addition
Not criticizing only you but fellow mock drafters, can we please stop designating this 7th round pick to Lutzenkirchen? It seems like every mock I've seen on here thus far has him being picked in the 7th. I realize very late round talent is hard to evaluate in December, but it'd be much more creative to me if you went with an unknown here or there thats stock could rise come draft time. Just my two cents.
Glennon reminds me a lot of Joe Flacco. Whether that's good or bad I don't know. I do know that a lot of the balls that he threw on the highlight reels that impressed me were 7 yards or less and a lot of the ones that made me question him were 20+.
I've had the opposite viewing myself. His short throws look less accurate and always seem to lack touch to me, but his intermediate and deep throws look good. Guess its all in which games you watch.
In the games I watched he was a completion machine on the slants, looking positively Brady-esque in moving the chains. He didn't look all that good on the long ball though with a couple of excellent throws mixed in with about a dozen that should never have left his hand. He looked Brady-esque short and Sanchez-esque in the deep game.
What that tells you is that he's a good fit in the west coast over some more vertical down field offenses. Not really a good if the Jets stay ground & pound. You must offset the defense playing downhilll to stop the run w/ an aggressive vertical passing game. It doesn't doesn't need to be complex just capable of moving the chains, keeping the safety's honest & 2-3 big catches a game.
There are several QB's in this draft that look like west coast players. The tendency to have QB's operate out of the shotgun and throw slants ad nauseum is becoming really well established at the college level. It's telling that a lot of the guys used this way are not considered topflight prospects despite putting up numbers and even wins in college that would have made them a clear 1st rounder a decade ago.
I think Glennon has the best long ball in this class by far, and when he throws it, its fairly accurate. He has some problems not setting his feet because he has so much confidence in his arm, but with good coaching (something we currently dont have) I truly think Glennon can at the very least be a Joe Flacco. Glennon has been compared to Flacco a lot (but a more polished Joe Flacco) because of his arm strength and ability to throw the deep ball...
Truthfully I haven't watched any of him. I was commenting on Brad's take. I don't really evaluate QB's too much as there are just too many factors to consider.Sure you can tell who can make all the throws & who can't but when you get into reading defenses, leadership qualities, & handling adversity..it's just a crapshoot.
