My 2009 Mock Draft I've been pretty active the last few days in the draft section of this board. As you can tell, I'm a HUGE fan of the draft and every year I've wanted to do one. This is the year. I'm not sure how many rounds I'm going to do, thus far I'm working on round 1 and I just might keep going for 2 rounds. This is my very first ever mock. I'm very excited and nervous at the same time. I will be posting it in this thread as soon as it's done. I'm going to try and be as detailed as I can in why a team picks a player. Meanwhile, feel free to give me ideas on how to better my mock, like I said, this is my very first mock attempt. Thanks guys.
Don't be cookie cutter, just go on what you feel are the right decisions. You can't defend opinions that aren't your own; and while some things you may choose to do won't make sense to others, you should be able to explain why you believe they do.
Yeah I agree with Green Hurricane and I'll echo some of it. Just look at the needs a team has versus the value available in the draft. You can use other mocks as guides if you're stuck or some "team offseason needs" pages to give you an idea of what positions teams may target in draft (Walterfootball.com has a pretty complete one). But it's your draft.. So if you have an idea or thought that you don't see too often, go out on a limb and predict it. If you can support it this will make it all the better. The responses you get will likely be very mixed, but take it as simply feedback and incorporate it into your next mock if you agree. Or if you don't, make a stronger case for your pick. That's about it I guess.. Start with one round and if you feel like you can do another round or two, then go for it.
I actually am using Walterfootball's off season needs page as we speak. It's very detailed and something I will use in doing my mock. I plan on spending most of the day on it and hope to have it posted later on today. I've gotten the draft order and every teams needs. Should I do trades? I've thought about it. Also I'd like to add, I'm not going to do this draft to make the Jets only look good. Every team will be used equally
This is harder than I had expected. I've done the first dozen or so picks and already I have two teams trading up. Some teams big needs can make them move down 5-7 spots, still get their man, and an additional pick. I think I might do two rounds here, not sure yet.
Before you read this, I want to explain the trades that happen in here. They are done by NEED of a player. If a team feels the need to draft on certain player and will still be there later on, they will trade down to a team who would like to move up and also give them something else as well. I'm sure you all understand the basic idea, I just don't want to hear crap about the trades made. Plus I feel the teams moving up would make a more realistic offer than what I have placed for them. Teams make moves on NEED more than wants and this is no different. Bvon's 2009 NFL Draft 1st Round 1. Detroit Lions - Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia 2. St. Louis Rams - Eugene Monroe, LT, Virginia 3. Kansas City Chiefs - Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest 4. Seattle Seahawks - Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas 5. Cleveland Browns have traded their pick to the Green Bay Packers #9 pick and a 4th rounder. Green Bay Packers - Jason Smith, LT, Baylor 6. Cincinnati Bengals - Michael Oher, RT, Ole Miss 7. Oakland Raiders - Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech 8. Jacksonville Jaguars - B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College 9. Cleveland Browns (from Green Bay Packers) - Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri 10. San Francisco 49ers - Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois 11. Buffalo Bills - Aaron Mabin, DE, Penn State 12. Denver Broncos - Everette Brown, DE, Florida St. 13.Washington Redskins have traded their pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the #19 pick and a 4th rounder. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Mark Sanchez, QB, USC 14. New Orleans Saints - Malcom Jenkins, CB, Ohio St. 15. Houston Texans - Chris Wells, RB, Ohio St. 16. San Diego Chargers - Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU 17. New York Jets - Darrius Heyward Bey, WR, Maryland 18. Chicago Bears - Darius Butler - CB, Connecticut 19. Washington Redskins (from Tampa Bay Buccaneers) - Duke Robinson, G, Oklahoma 20. Arizona Cardinals - James Laurinaitis, ILB, Ohio St. 32. Pittsburgh Steelers - Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech I expect people to disagree with things I've done here and that is fine. No one person can do everything to have everyone be happy, never works that way. As I said before, this is my very first attempt at a full round of a mock ever. I now know how hard it is to do this and my ideas for certain teams now are gone now that I've really taken a look at the round as a whole. I plan on doing at least one more mock in a week or so, could get in as many as 3 more. Thank you for taking the time to read my work and all feedback is accepted, good or bad.
Oooof I would hate DHB in the first round. Especially with Nicks Harvin and Moreno still there. I don't see the Eagles passing on a running back if Wells or Moreno is there. I don't see the Vikings going QB after trading for Rosenfels. Although really Freeman is going to need time to develop so he could be the contingency plan if Tavaris or Sage suck
Good first effort Bvon! That said some fine tuning for sure. Especially with the trades, there is a trade value chart out there somewhere, and it gives a value to each overall pick, so to trade up in the first round, barring moving just a single spot, it will really take much more than a 4th round pick. I too agree with mjsexay, I am not a DHB fan, i feel that he is soft, and won't pan out, that said there are reasons he is a projected first round pick. so if the value is right, it makes sense. other thoughts, with the Browns, if they see Orakpo is gone at #5, and they are able to move down, i think the pick is Everette Brown. Mangini is still searching for his 3-4 OLB star. Brown is just about as hard a worker as you can find, I figure he is the second safest defensive pick in this draft behind Curry. Also I still think Sean Smith goes ahead of Deion Butler, otherwise things look pretty good!
I'll comment on the teams I'm currently the GM. Miami......we have Ted Ginn....no Harvin needed. Giants....can use a RB, but doubt would use a Rd 1 on a RB....even with Moreno available. I doubt Moreno would fall that far. Green Bay.......Can't see them trading up for an OT......if they stay put, could have had Everette Brown, a huge need. After Mr Currry (Best defensive player in 6 years)....I'm predicting Everette Brown to be the best defensive player in this draft. Most of your other picks are pretty decent...good effort, I've done them, they take time and can be a pain in the ass.
I don't think the Packers would be the team to trade up... I couldn't see Seattle going DE again. They just took Lawrence Jackson last year. Plus they still have Patrick Kerney and Darryl Tapp.. Interesting thought though.. Everette Brown will go ahead of Aaron Maybin. I don't see the Giants going RB that early. Why would the Cards' go ILB? They have their starters in place and Laurinaitis isn't a fit in the 3-4 IMO. The Steelers are locked in at OLB with James Harrison and Lamar Woodley. I could see a 3-4 DE, but Michael Johnson is far from that.. A lot of criticism here, but it's your first shot at it... Seems a bit high for Darius Butler, but it's possible. He's a very good player. I don't like Indy going DB. They have very nice depth there already IMO. And Miami needs a possession guy. Harvin is similar to Ted Ginn I don't think Houston goes RB that early. I like the trade up by the Bucs'... It makes sense. Not a fan of DHB at all..
I'm very happy with everyone's thoughts on this. I am FOR sure going to make another one. When I was drafting I always picked the guy who was best for the team IMO. Now on to what you all said. MJ2sexay - I hated putting DHB there, but, as I thought of it and went through the other WRs, he seemed to stick out. I don't think I would have picked him now if I re-did the draft. I just think after Crabtree and Maclin, the other WRs are kinda a stretch at 17. I didn't want to trade down or move up with this pick, it felt good, for some reason just sitting there. I think if Freeman somehow is there at 22, the Vikings would be insane to not draft him. Sage is not going to be your franchise QB no matter how many Adrian Peterson's you have on your team. Some have him going as high as 10 to the 49ers! NYJetsRule - Thanks for the comments. I know there is a value chart, but, I did this with the thought of the teams hammering out deals (Other picks or players) and just take care of the 1st round. I know a 4th is not really going to get it done, but, I just feel that those two trades are the most likely to happen in this draft as of now. I agree with DHB, I really had a hard time picking someone and next draft, we might do something different. Cleveland can use another WR to go along with Edwards. I think Maclin would be a very nice fit there. Anderson/Quinn/whoever can use a nice target and Maclin was the BPA in that position. I do agree however that Mangini does need that 3-4 star, might get it in later rounds. I nearly had Sean Smith go 14th to the Saints and 16th to the Chargers. WW85 - IMO Ted Ginn is not a #1 WR. He needs someone to help spread the D besides with wildcat and Harvin might be the guy to do that. Pennington would love another good WR to throw to as well. I've seen Knowshon fall as far as Arizona at 31! I can't see the Giants passing him up if he's sitting right there. If the Eagles don't jump on him at 28, NY will snag him for sure. NY loves the power run with the lightning quick guy when you are tired. I think Knowshon would fit in perfect. Why wouldn't Grren Bay try and move up, grab a LT, which they need, and on top of it, he could be the #1 overall pick and if he falls out of the top 3, SOMEONE will make a move to grab him. JetFaninPA - Man, you ripped me apart! It's cool tho, I love doing this. Your comments pretty much the same as everyone else except one thing. Tampa moving up to grab Sanchez. I am 90% sure that this will happen. I don't think they are sold on Freeman nor am I sold that they think one of the top 3 would even be there at 19! I can see them trying to even get in the top 10 to grab Sanchez.
