yep. the 3-8 defense works when those 3 are all pro caliber and can consistently get to the QB. Kenyon Coleman isn't that guy, he is a run stuffing DE and a role player. There needs to be blitzers from all angles to confuse an offense. The Jets don't do it.
And we're 9-5 without doing it, and have beaten two of the better teams in football consecutively with this supposed weakness. So think about it when we do. It's not even like we HAVEN'T done that this year...I'm sure the Cardinals, Rams, and Bills would disagree that this D isn't aggressive. Question to the board: You guys think that with the size, speed, and talent on this D that we can't do that? Or that we HAVEN'T done that? At one point this season we were talking about the Jets topping the Giants sack numbers from last year...now the D struggles in a few games and no one can do anything? Thats how this stuff works? I realize that I'm addressing the same fan base that complained about beating the Bengals by two TD's and still can't get over a Raiders loss from like 6 weeks ago...but seriously? All that shit is forgotten? And all this a year after we saw a NY team feel its way through a regular season, kind of stumble into the playoffs, and then kick it up a notch? Really? Now this team is a pretender? I cannot wait for this team to shut it's own fan base up...1. because it'd be nice to see them do it for once and 2. because they totally can.
They found a solid scheme and stuck with it... We've found a good scheme once in the last 8 years (2004) and we ended up ditching the DC ASAP and switching schemes.... Now we're still looking
here is the overall argument so that this doesn't become a back and forth: I think that while the current system has gotten 9 wins, I see areas of improvement with not only scheme but mentality. It can get better and make this team a AFC Title contender again. You think that there is a bump in the road here and there and that everything is fine, and still a AFC Title contender.. I don't feel that we are going to move from our positions on the subject. *shakes your hand*... agree to disagree.
And as far as the Steelers go...most/many key players on that D...Hampton, Smith, Farrior, Hoke, Foote, Troy P., Taylor, and Townsend...and thats on D alone...have been together for 8+ years...they've seen and done everything together as far as D goes...doesn't experience like that help? What did you guys really expect of the Jets this year that you're not gettign?
No, we're not. We've been running a 3-4 with the same coaches for 3 years now. Was the Steelers D born perfect?
What mentality? Was our mentality wrong this week when we forced what...5 turnovers, 4 INTs, and set a franchise record for D TDs? It's not mentality...it's just some bad games...teams have those...the Yankees in '1998 started the season something like 2-4...I realize baseball is a whole lot longer than football...but back then everyone was panicking too. Shit happens. Doesn't mean it can't be fixed, or that things were always that way and will always remain that way.
DWare, I usually agree with you, but I don't see how the last three games don't at least concern you, or if they do, you hide it very well.
Doest make me jealous, it just reinforces the obvious.. what a difference quality coaches make compared to morons... We have allot of good talent. our coaching staff sucks.
I've said this several times. I become envious of how a successful 3-4 is run such as Pittsburgh. Is their personnel better? Sure. Is their defensive coordinator better? Of course. But I still can't fathom at how their blitzes always seem to have 1 guy UNTOUCHED and gets a free-shot at the QB...I don't consider Ike Taylor and Deshea Townsend "great"...I hear the Rhodes excuse of playing back all the time, but I don't see Pittsburgh having a problem unleashing Polamalu anyway he wants to. When the Jets blitz...It just looks so slow, and the offensive lineman are actually WAITING for whoever is blitzing...Its usually like Ellis after 4 seconds who can break off somebody and pressure the QB. So yes...It sucks when I see how creative Lebeau gets in his blitzes...And how boring Sutton's are.
Exactly. The Steelers adopted a defensive scheme it seems 20 years ago and haven't deviated from it since. The acquire players that fit that scheme. They don't draft a college DE and try and make him an OLB in one off season. Furthermore, they make rushing the passer the first assignment for an OLB. For the most part, guys like Porter and James Harrison do not have coverage responsibilities. They don't experiment with an undersized 3 gap tackle and try to make him a nose tackle. Instead, they just draft Casey Hampton and move forward.
YES YES YES! Pittsburgh actually plays solid defense! And hits their opponents hard that the opponent will feel the pain in the morning! All the Jets do is lay a hand, and runningbacks will slip the tackle like it was nothing.

When you watch the Steelers, you always expect them to stop the team. I'm shocked most of the time when the opposing team gets a first down on the Steelers. They've done this also with probably the toughest schedule in all of football. Take a look NY Jets players and coaches, that's the kind of defense that wins superbowls. SO TRUE AND SAYS IT ALL!
Mike Vrabel? Doesn't count? Or did they use him at 3-4 DE instead of OLB back then? I'm not even going to address the rest of the crap...Hampton fell into their laps in '01...mostly because few teams besides the Pats, Ravens, and Steelers ran the 3-4 at the time. It's not like Mangini handpicked DRob to be his NT.
I hide it very well. Theres another negative BS on this board for me to feel like I'm contributing anything to this site by just going with it. It also helps that it's so easy to poke holes in these negative things just because a fact check isn't on most posters priority list. It's not like I don't notice the minimal pass rush, the decline in play from Jenkins, the decline in play from the OLBs, and just a general lack of fluidity in the team play. 1. Me getting mad won't change shit. 2. They've played better before, all of it in this season. 3. I trust the guys running the team, which appears to be a bad thing to do here.
There a tough nose football team but i still think we could beat em. Like we did last year with a shit roster.
so THAT'S your angle..you're playing the "blind faith" card. Dude...let me help you understand something. When a team has a bad game, "Flying off the handle" with negativity is the wrong way to look at things....but when a team has 3 (yes i know we won yesterday, but it was on a fluke play...so let's not go there) bad games in a row....with no subtle adjustments being applied....then there's going to be some skepticism. Just because the Jets played awesome a month ago...doesn't mean that's the same team heading to SEA next week (i sure as hell hope it is though). The Eagles were hot garbage a month ago...and they've turned it on as of late...should we assume that they're still a garbage team because of how they played in Cincy & Balt? You're saying that the Jets are still the same team that played well against TEN and NWE....and i'm saying, until i see some improvement in the consistency of this team, they ARE NOT. I think that's a fair assessment.
Same players. Same coaches. Only thing thats changed is 3 bad games...one that resulted in a win. Sorry, but if your goal is to dominate every game in and out...then you're probably looking at the wrong sport. Before these 3 games, we played 3 sick games....so tell me what that means? And yes, I am playing the blind faith card. Like I said before, theres more than enough people saying the crap I could be saying for me. Mangini's got goals for this team, and the fan base seems like they can't wait for him to fail so they can get him out so they can move onto the next coach to complain about. I'm not really down with that...so I'll stick with my blind faith. Gotta have faith in something, right? I have no idea what point you're triyng to make on the Eagles BTW. It's the same point I'm trying to make, but in reverse. Maybe the Eagles played some bad games and were a good team all along? Why can't you treat the Jets like that? Is it that different? Are the Eagles just better or something?
