Seems to me he could be right in the mix if he keeps performing like we've seen so far.

A very outside shot. Given that the Jets want him to wreak havoc on the inside, his impact on the game will not be reflected very well in stats.

His attitude doesn't bode well for the long season. He's certainly got the talent and he definitely looks good... I just wonder if he'll mentally hold up the whole season.

He is currently tied for 2nd in sacks (3) and tied in 1st for forced fumbles (2) in the preseason. Preseason stats are worth about as much as a poopy flavored lolly pop but I think it makes sense to use them in response to this post.

He will be real good. But not sure if he can be DROY. He still has to learn some stuff and show consistency.

I think Coples can be in the convo, but I think Luke Kuechley will win DPOTY hands down

I have to agree with that, Kuechley looked like an animal the other night.

It's a lot easier for a rookie MLB to win DROY than a lineman on a team that loves to blitz. It also helps that Kuechley has looked like a monster so far, but I'm happy with what I've seen from Coples in three games, very happy. Except that whole attitude thing.

Think he'll do well & was happy with pick. Don't think he has a shot @ at this award though. If the Jets D is dominant, the press will be giving most of the attention to Revis & the rest of the backfield. For awards like this, media attention is the big tie-breaker between players of comparable talents.

All this talk about being lazy & a bust .... too many people focusing on news article blurbs instead of learning his whole history.

Its easier for someone who is involved every play to get DPOY over CBs so that takes 3 first rounders out of it. It will be either Coples or a handful of the other LBs or DEs taken around his pick. Mark Barron is also an outside shot. Either way I like Coples and I think he has a shot at it. I wasn't high at all on his draft pick I really wanted DeCastro or atleast Ingram but now I'm really happy. He's physically an absolute monster and has the moves to be a pass rushing DE which is something we haven't had since Abraham left.

I also really like how after the 2010 season one of my biggest concerns was our D line and how it really got 0 penetration, was old, and the weakest unit of our D. 2 years later with Wilk Ellis and Coples and I really love the future of our D line. All 3 picks look great right now.

Shows why you have to wait a little while before grading a draft. Heard a lot of how Tanny hasn't had a good draft in years but our last couple now look really good. Also Ducasse is finally playing better and KW has improved.

I gave him an outside shot because everybody knows that Luke Kuechly is going to win that award. He's going to rack up a huge number of tackles and DROY is about the numbers.

To win DROY Coples is going to need about 11 sacks and that's asking a lot.

IMO, Kuechly, Melvin Ingram and Coples will be the 3 fighting for DROY. Kuechly will probably win it though, he has looked like a superstar all of preseason and is EVERYWHERE on the field. I wouldnt be surprise if he led the league in tackles and had a few picks.

Nobody matters but Kuechly. He's going to get upwards of 140 tackles if he plays the whole season and that's going to win DROY. I said Coples needed 11 sacks to get DROY. He might well need 15. Writers are kind of notorious for voting for squeaky clean guys who perform over guys with a rep - undeserved or not.

Don't forget Jon Beason wasn't playing that game. In the regular season the Panthers are still going to attempt to funnel offensive players towards Beason.

From what I have seen so far no reason he shouldn't be a legit contender for this.

can we play a game or two first? But, if he stays motivated and has the stamina; why not? The guy has some very rare physical ability and skill....consistency will be the key

True, but as you noted preseason stats don't mean jack. Let's see him keep those numbers up when he's playing all starters, and the other offenses are running their full playbooks.

I could be wrong, but just by virtue of his role in the defense I have a hard time imagining Coples getting more than 6 or 7 sacks. Which could be part of a brilliant rookie season, but isn't the type of flashy number that wins you an award.
