I'm trying to get a feel for what the fan base wants; based on other threads, RR's support seems mixed at best. All things being equal, should RR remain our Head Coach?
It makes no sense to fire Ryan now. This team has no QB and this league requires an elite QB for consistent success. He is an excellent defensive coach and when our D is healthy we aren't bad. He gets another year..at least.
Letting him go will set this franchise back quite a bit. We don't need to consistently have a merry go round.
I completely support keeping Rex for at least the next season. I'm just worried, though, because if Tanny is fired (as I believe he should be), I'm not sure if Woody will keep Rex. New GMs usually mean new everything in the coaching department.
I'm sure Rex can make a decent argument that with even average QB play, he would have been in the playoffs all four years of his tenure. It falls upon Tannenbaum for extending Sanchez's contract or at the very least giving him the likes of Clyde gates and Chaz Schillens to work with when other, better alternatives were still out in the free market.
We might have to suffer from a "promote from within" unless we can steal away a potential GM candidate from Balt or somewhere else that is Pro Ryan. The wheels on the Jets coaching bus go round and round, round and round.... 3 cheers for instability?
im on the fence with rex. if he even puts sanchez into a competition next year then i will say i want him gone. i dont think its going to matter. it really depends on what happens with the tannenbaum. if they fire him then rex will be gone, if they keep him around and just add people to help him pull up his pants then rex will be back.
Absolutely. he has flaws, but they are easily correctable with a little self reflection on the failure of this season.
Yes. He should have atleast 1 more season, its no question (in my opinion). Rex has gotten alot out of what he has been given to work with over his tenure, especially the first 2 years. We have had a top tier Defense consistently despite: 1. A legit pass rusher. Haven't had a guy that can consistently get pressure on the QB without having to blitz, scheme, etc. 2. Top defensive players unable to stay healthy for the most part. We lost our best Defensive player in 2009 (best DP going into the season) in Kris Jenkins for the season.....the NT position has been unreliable all together when you consider how many games Kris missed, then we develop a solid replacement in Pouha who also struggles to stay healthy. Lost our "QB of the Secondary" back to back years in 2010 and 2011 in Jim Leonhard. Lost Revis for all but a game or two this year.....arguably the best defensive player in the game today. 3. A legit Safety until this season. Eric Smith and Jim Leonhard had to be the slowest FS/SS duo in the league till we finally got a legit playmaker in Landry. Its a shame Rhodes went "Hollywood" on Rex, he could of been great in this defense if not for the ego and BS. 4. We have developed solid role players over his tenure in Devito, Pouha, Ihedigbo, Drew Coleman, Lowery, etc. Mo has really developed and made big strides from year 1 to year 2. Even Kyle Wilson has improved since his rookie year. Then you have good players like Revis and Cro who both FLOURISHED under Rex.....David Harris also improved under Rex watch, unfortunately he hasn't looked as good this year (maybe health reasons?). Hell he even made Aaron Maybin serviceable last season. The offense has been lacking for the majority of Rex's tenure, mainly at the QB position. Its no secret Rex isn't an offensive guru by any stretch, but how many HCs are on BOTH sides of the ball? 90% of the HCs are good to excellent on one side of the ball, and nothing special on the opposite side of the ball. Sean Peyton needed Greg Williams to run his D before being a legit SB threat. Kubiak needed Wade Philips before Houston could take the next step. Peyton and Indy needed a defensive mind in Dungy before winning the big one. Tampa and Kiffen (DC) needed Gruden to field a respectable O prior to winning a SB, etc, etc. Rex has definatly made the Jets a top tier team on one side of the ball, now hopefully we can get a Norv Turner or some other respectable coach to run the Offense and we will be a contender year in and year out. Considering how much success Rex has had without a legit pass rusher, with a bottom 3rd of the league QB (at best) and having key injuries to his best O and D player going into 2009 (Leon and Kris), losing the QB of the secondary in back to back seasons in Leonhard.....the man has done a hell of a job IMO and needs to be here atleast 1 more year. I love Rex and wish things had turned out differently. That said, can the offense ever truly improve with him running things? Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
First off, for all the people that say Rex won with Mangini's players, he still WON. Mangini went 5-11 both seasons with the Browns and still choked in 2008. Even though Favre was a significant factor you can't excuse the lack of in game adjustments by Mangini among other things. Rex's drafts in 2009-2010 have been poor, but these last two drafts have produced a solid player like Kerely, a potential big time DE in Coples, and a big time stud in Wilkerson. Powell could also be a very solid back as well. Rex is the best head coach this team has ever had, with all due respect to Weeb Ewbank. The media and other fans say we need to emulate a team like the Steelers, but how can u emulate them if you fire Rex and bring in the 5th head coach in 13 years? Bottom line if the Jets had Matt Moore as their starting QB would the Jets be in playoff contention right now? I say yes. Rex isn't the problem, its Sanchez. Bring in Norv as the OC and a veteran QB like Moore and everything can change. By the way if Rex gets this team to 8-8 with the QB situation he has had you could argue that is a really good coaching job considering all the injuries as well.
Rex needs and deserves to stay. I understand it will be harder for him to keep his job if Tanny is let go but we need a little stability at the HC position.
does rex shoulder no blame for continuing to coddle sanchez? if rex gets this same team to 6-10 what does that say?
He shoulders blame for Sanchez, no doubt. I think he assumed that Sanchez wouldn't be throwing 4 interceptions a game after being benched. It was a fair assumption, but unfortunately he's been proven wrong. As for him getting us to 6-10 this year, I doubt that will be the case. I personally think he will get us to 8-8 with McElroy.
Rex is a joke. If anything, keep him as a D coordinator but this clown is no head coach. His act is old. He has yet to bring in one single pass rusher, completely lost the locker room last year, talks up his team as if they are the best ever, hires Morono to be his offensive coordinator, and basically let his love fest with Sanchez cost this team the playoffs. I think Rexs inability to pull Sanchez with the season on the line in MULTIPLE games this year will cost him his job as it should. This team has been pathetic on the offensive side of the ball for 4 years now and Rex has something to do with that as well. Great defensive coordinator, but shitty head coach. Just like Buddy....
i think you are right and we will get to 8-8 but what if? he stayed with sanchez 5 games too long, then went back to him and left himself no outs. i think he did more than assume i think he let his pride and bravado get in the way of making good decisions. thats what scares me about rex.
I'm on the fence, could go either way. I don't like the way he's handled our QB situation. I don't like the lack of imagination with Tebow or his love affair with Suckchez. It doesn't matter who is behind him, Sanchez should have been benched weeks ago.
I mean, wasn't it rumored that Rex wanted McElroy a couple of weeks ago? But then, Tannenbaum and Sporano wanted Sanchez? Same goes for Tebow. Tannenbaum wanted him, not Woody. Everything points to Tannenbaum getting fired. Unless we have Sean Payton in our back pocket, firing Rex Ryan would be a huge mistake.
I don't really blame Rex for sticking with Sanchez. When you are financially bound to a qb who needs all the mental support he can get, it is obvious that you must stick with him as the HC until it becomes unfeasible. That is exactly what Rex did; after the Cardinals game I still thought Sanchez gave us the best shot at the playoffs. Clearly we were both wrong, but I don't blame Rex for that. I blame Sanchez and I blame the organization itself. I still blame Rex for not remaining in touch with the offense, however. He needs to do a better job of not just being a glorified Defensive Coordinator. A strong QB or OC may fix this problem, however.
