I just don't see how a 40 year old quarterback is going to improve. Old dog, new tricks....leopards changing spots.....
Fans in Green Bay are laughing right now. They're happy to be done with Favre and his team-ruining antics.
I guess I wouldn't mind seeing Favre compete with Clemens/Ratliff/Ainge/draft pick. Why not? We have some good stuff on this team, so if he gives us the best chance to win next year, why not? But if Clemens or one of the others looks better in camp/preseason or if/when Favre craps the bed in the regular season, make the switch.
I dunno, I'm sorta torn between the options. Who else do we have to replace Favre? Turning the reigns over to Clemens or Ratliff feels like a "rebuild" movement, and with the talent on the team, I don't think that's too wise. I hope that with a new coach, things will change in the passing game and not be this "toss up a prayer" routine we got going now. On the other hand...Favre sucks.
Thats the problem. If it was Clemens throwing 22 TDs, people would be calling for him to be benched. They will never bench Brett, I just cannot see it happening if he comes back.
No more Favre please. I'm drained from all the gunslinging and the drama. I'd rather take my chances with someone else.
If do not bring Favre back, there are really very few options out there. We are not going to have a great first round pick to select an impact QB. Matt Cassell is quite good, but I doubt NE will let him go to the Jets, especially with Brady having complications in his recovery and might miss 2009 season as well. Whether we keep Brett or not, we do not have a long term solution at QB, and what makes me mad is that one of the best QBs in the league was here all along. Check out QB ratings for this year. Chad is number two overall with amazing 97.4 ranking. With a guy like that, at 33 years of age, we could be set at QB for years to come. Number two overall rating in NFL. What a disastrous decision it turned out to be to let Chad go. Even in his worst year Chad had more TDs than INTs and had better rating than Brad last year. And he never had 6 Pro Bowlers to work with. Now we are reduced to deciding whether to keep bottom third ranked old QB for next year, when we could have had #2 overall younger guy for years to come. What a disappointment.
What does everyone think about bringing in a guy like Derek Anderson? He played very well in Cleveland last year and since Brady Quinn is the future, we could get him for a low draft pick.
I hate to say it, but I would like to see Ratliff/Clemens fight for the job, running a northeast offense with everything based off of the run and play action, with an experienced so-called "game manager" veteran QB to be there for game three or game four ready to take the starter reins if the wheels fall off (much like Vinny was there in '98 to take over after Foley could not get it done). Of course, the perfect vet for that sort of situation would be... wait for it... Chad Pennington. Chad's out of the question, so have to consider someone who will not cost a lot of money and who will not meltdown. I don't know who that would be at that point.
If BF would play for us again, it would be great--except this time, he's benchable. As bad as BF looked at times, I still think he has it and can take us to the SB. Let him work with the CS over the off-season and pre-season and come out ready with a decent offensive gameplan. That said, why the hell would he play for us again? He looked miserable here at times. The guys about having fun.
