I am sure there is a post somewhere with this question but with OTA and the off season almost over, and nothing happening for the next 7 weeks or so, the only thing over our heads in the possibility of getting Plaxico. I am on record sticking with what we have and giivng the young vets a chance. Of course, that was compated to drafting a WR at # 1 or trading for Edwards or Bouldin. Burress is another story. He's the 3rd best receiver in the league behind Fitz and Moss, he's a QB dream. Manning is just another QB without the guy, he pretty much beat the Pack in the champioship game and we know what he did in the Super Bowl. He's not an egotistic jack ass like Owens and he plays hurt. He's just done some dumb things but no drug problems and its not like he shot someone, the idiot shot himself. Signing him to go along with Cotch, Leon and Keller could make our offense scary. This could put us over the top. Don't blink your eyes cause the Jets will have his ass signed the second he's allowed to come back ths year. What do you think?
I am 100% on board with Burress, even if he's probably not playing more than 8-12 games if he's lucky.
I want him but I have to disagree with that...I'd put Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson ahead of him. But yes, get Burress.
I wish the answer to this question was based solely on football ability. If it was then I think a good majority of this board would be in favor of adding Plax in a heartbeat. Yet this is also a question of character, media attention, distractions to his teammates and the franchise as a whole. I'm not sure how highly Burress scores in any of these fields. I don't think his character will be an issue as for the most part he was a solid teammate all the years he was with the Giants. Media attention is one factor that plays against him and the Jets will have to put up with that the entire year he's here. Although I think if we do sign him and he comes in and keeps his mouth shut then the media distraction will go away as the season progresses as long as he helps us win games. Yes the NY media is ten times worse than anywhere else so he'll be consumed by it. However there have been many other star crossed athletes who have played in this town at a high level after damaging their image. Strawberry, Doc Gooden, LT, Latrell, Larry Johnson, A Rod, Pettite, Clemens are all examples. I'm all about the Jets winning. After watching minicamp in person it was quite noticeable that we lack a true Big Long playmaking WR. He definitely fills this void, will be signed to a one year tender that's all incentive based and if he doesn't perform we could cut him at anytime with no impact on our cap for the future. So my point is Why Not? He's not the first idiot with a gun and not the last. I don't condone what he did but everyone deserves an second chance at their profession. I really think we end up signing him for all those reasons.
But he's been in New York. Sure, the gun thing throws a major wrench into it, and he could be a distraction, but players on the team seem fine with bringing him on board, and his talents would be a perfect fit for us. And he's not a top 3 receiver in the game. I probably wouldn't even have him top 10. But he has the size to be a huge red zone threat for us. That's something we do not have right now.
What he said. you can't go wrong getting him because due to the circumstances he would probably get an incentive laden contract and we wouldn't have to give up anything to add a pro bowler to our roster. no brainer.
listen, while plax may be in the mix of all the recent "criminal" allegations made against nfl players in the last year,(theres been alot more off-field personal life BS than i can remember ever happening before) his wasnt really that bad, stupid yes but it was all on his shoulders, he made the mistake and got all the reprocussions of that mistake and is paying the price. i think he actually has good character (somewhere) and that this whole incident will most likely be his wake up call. going from a top nfl receiver to the dumbass who shot himself and being called a gangster all over the internet and tv, plus setting back his professional career, i believe hes the type that will take the warning and change. someone like pacman you know is a lost cause. i dunno thats just my gut feeling, now excuse me while i put on my flame suit.
Funny thing is I remember sitting in front of the TV during the draft and wishing the Jets would have drafted him right out of college. Now that he is within our grasp we should trulely pull the trigger ( Pardon the Pun ) and get him without a doubt.
Jets WR's Insist they dont need Burress contradictory to what i think and just posted, but some good quotes from cotchery and the like on the subject
Burress won't cost any compensation other than money...Boldin is at least a second round pick (altho they reportedly turned offers for a second round pick so they're probably looking for a first)
I don't see any reason why a 1st isn't a great bargain for a guy like Boldin...A guaranteed #1 wr. Drafting a wr with a 1st rd pick is always a risk
But he is a weapon - and a proven one. Out of any free agent available, he presents the most upgrade value and will likely come cheaper than if he hadn't shot himself - this is a signing worth making. An incentive laden contract that stipulates any further run ins with the law requires a full refund of bonus / incentive money would do the trick. I think it's a no brainer - sign him.
who cares where hes ranked, id like someone who you can just put it up high where only he can get it and actually comes down with it, burress is that type. im not looking for the guy to be the savior of the team, i think we can get it done without him, but it would just be a nice option that every once a while to unload it downfield great throw or not and have the guy come down with it.
It seems like the consensus from the responses so far is Go get Burress. Huge red zone target, proven star, and comes very cheap. This is a no brainer.
