This isn't a panic attack post... but there is one thing that worries me re the Jes roster. Do we actually have any young talent on the roster locked up long term? Lot's of faith in Maccagnan but there is only so much you can do with limited draft picks. 1) All of the BIG money is currently allocated to veteran players whose play might fall of a cliff any day. Ferguson and Mangold have been in the league forever, Harris plays a punishing position (although there have been examples of player aging very well at the position) while Revis and Fitzpatrick (assuming he re-signs) have a quite relevant injury history. The young guys rounding this group are either complementary players (albeight very good complementary players) Decker and Skrine and a superstar, Wilkerson, that is on a franchise tag that we have no idea if we will be able to keep around or not next year (and who knwos, for the right offer he might leave this year in a trade). To sum it up we are investing heavily in old guys... 2) Of the up and coming guys we have a solid group of young guys (jury is still out on Milliner... if only he could get healthy he could become the surprise of the season imo). Folk isn't really old given his position and Forte is such a good fit schematically so I get why he was brought in. Giacomini is sub-par and should be cut. Hate we didn't go after Schwartz. However these young guys are all in certain positions, be it S (Gilchrist, Pryor) or DL (Richardson, Williams) with Carpenter the only exception on offense. Outside of those positions who do we have that's up and coming? Possibly Mauldin at OLB and Marcus Williams at CB but they still have a lot to prove. Big money (over $7 Mln salary cap number) Old - Ferguson (33), Marshall (32), Mangold (32), Harris (32), Revis (31), possibly Fitzpatrick (34) Young - Decker (29), Wilkerson (27), Skrine (27) Important investment (between $2 Mln and $6 Mln salary cap number) Old - Folk (32), Giacomini (31), Forte (31) Young - Gilchrist (28), Carpenter (27), Richardson (26), Milliner (25), Pryor (24), Williams (22).
Have to assume right around the same time guys like Richardson, Williams, and Pryor will be needing new deals D-Brick (next year), Mangold, Revis, Marshall, and Harris will be on the way out. Sucks losing a guy like Snacks and possibly Wilkerson without getting a return but when the old/new regime spends a 1st rounder on the D-Line regardless of "BPA" that's just what's going to happen. We really need to have a good draft next month and address different positions in the future.
It is true that the Jets are an old team that is going to be rebuilding soon. The previous rebuilding attempt ended in disaster and so we took a year or two off but we're going to have to replace those post-30 stars sooner rather than later and it is going to get very ugly before that process is done. Step one in getting that process accomplished is probably learning how to efficiently destroy a billboard after it is put up. Step two is getting some drone technology to cut banners that planes are trailing behind them. Step three is holding the idiots who like billboards and planes accountable when they're putting the full court press on.
2018, a lot of players don't appear to be under the pay-roll. Gotta continue the youth movement by getting the best players via the draft.
It's the NFL. Most players are lucky if they receive one big payday. Many of em worth paying aren't going to risk money in the long term by accepting a team friendly, non guaranteed contract.
Idzik deserved every billboard he got. He did a bad job picking players, and he purposely refused to spend to get Rex fired. Had he spent a little in 2014, Macc could have saved in 2015 without being under the salary floor. Had Idzik stayed GM, he would have spent as much as Macc did, almost certainly with worse returns. And we would really be screwed.
In a sense, your question doesn't make a lot of sense. Most rookie contracts are 4-5 years. The good-great ones score with their 2nd contract. Because the Jets drafted so freaking poorly prior to Mac's hiring, there are very few players that fit in that group. Both Mo and Snacks could have been tied up long term with the Jets if they were reasonable with their contract demands. Now Snacks is gone, and Mo probably will be after this year. Decker and Skrine are probably the only two member of the big money group that will be here in 2018, and even they may be gone. Ferguson will be gone (or should be) after this season. Revis, Mangold and Harris may have 2 more seasons, but that's it. If Fitzpatrick re-signs with us, it should be as a starter for 2016, and as a backup for 2017, and possibly 2018. Folk will probably only be here another year or two, but if the Jets need the cap space this year, he could be cut this year. Giacomini could be gone this year, but if not, will almost certainly be gone, or be here at a reduced salary next year. Forte is probably only here for a year or two. Gilchrist could play out his contract, or the Jets could decide to cut bait with him after this season, as he would give them $5,375,000 cap space for next season. Although with the way salaries are escalating rapidly, and with the Jets supposedly having cap a good amount of space next year already (and would have more by cutting Brick and Revis), he may play out his contract and re-sign. Carpenter isn't going anywhere. With Richardson, depends if he stays out of trouble and grows up. If he can't, then he'll never get that big contract he thinks he deserves, at least not from the Jets. If he does grow up and stays out of trouble, will he have learned anything from the Wilkerson situation? That will decided whether we lock him long term or allow him to walk. Wilkerson is a greedy bastard and I hope is traded soon. I feel confident that Pryor will be locked up, as will Williams if his play continues to develop and he stays out of trouble. I'm not counting on Milliner for anything. I think it more than likely, that he gets injured again and the Jets cut bait with him before TC is over. I hope I'm wrong. It would be great if he could get healthy and stay healthy and prove to be a solid starter for the next 5-6 years, but I'm not holding my breath. Hence in two years, the Jets could have TONS of cap space and could have a bunch of young, up and coming players on cheap rookie contracts. That's what makes it so unfortunate about Mo and Snacks.
Soon? They're already in a rebuilding phase. The older players Mac signed last year were stop gaps to help keeps us competitive and to restore some respectability to the franchise. You have a point about the idiocy, cluelessness and impatience of some Jets fans, but hopefully, Woody has learned his lesson and he will continue to listen to Wolf's and Casserly's counsel. There are no perfect solutions to the mess that Mac inherited. He inherited a team whose draft record was abysmal, especially the prior year's 12-player draft that netted what, 1 starter, possibly a second starter, possibly a backup for that second player and bottom of the roster players, and half the picks never made it through the first season and a couple more could be gone after TC this year? He inherited a team whose RT position had been ignored for a long time, and the all-important LT position was ignored as well. At least at LT they had Brick, who up until a couple of years ago was still playing at a high level, but his replacement should have already been on the roster 2, if not 3 years ago. He inherited a team that had ignored the LB corps and obsessed over the DL and CB position. He inherited a team without a viable QB. He inherited a team that had blown opportunities to draft WRs but had added a good #2 WR via FA. He inherited a team without a real TE. He inherited a team with a Pro Bowl center who is rapidly nearing the end of his career. He inherited a team with disasters at both OG spots. He inherited a team with one of the worst punters in the NFL. You're right, it isn't going to be pretty and it isn't going to be overnight, but hopefully Woody has the stones and the common sense to see it through. What Mac inherited was a joke, an unmitigated cluster fuck excuse for a team. We're lucky anyone was even willing to consider taking our GM job.
